The detail

The striking views of Austria’s breathtaking East Tyrol are just part of the magic when you stay at Ufogel. Just outside Lienz, and constructed almost entirely of larch wood, this eye-catching property – part sculpture, part ingeniously designed holiday home – is one you won’t soon forget.

Step inside, and you almost feel like you’re still outside – thanks to the sweeping panoramas visible through the large, angled windows which give lounging around time a second-to-none Alpine backdrop. The interior has that unmistakable natural wood feel, and smell, and you’ll be surprised how much space this compact-looking construction affords you.

Accessed via a bridge of stairs, Ufogel packs plenty in. A living area with TV and dining table, and a kitchen area with stove, coffee machine, kettle, fridge and cookware, are just the start. There’s and cosy underfloor heating to keep you warm when needed, and air-conditioning too. Not to mention free Wi-Fi and on-site parking…

The mountainous views from the bathroom will add a new dimension to your morning shower, and sleeping options are many. Upstairs, you’ll find a spacious fold-out double bed in pine, and a separate area with bunk beds. You can even squeeze in a fifth guest downstairs, without them feeling they’re losing out. There’s ample storage for your clothes and bits and pieces too, so you don’t have to clutter the beautiful, multi-functional space which truly exudes light and openness.

The sleek, clean design of Ufogel is really quite something, with an air of Scandi cool despite being right in the heart of central Europe. In fact, you’ll feel a world away from everywhere, but the East Tyrol capital of Lienz is little more than 5 minutes’ drive away, and well worth exploring. Admire the medieval centre, visit the museums or soak it all up from a terrace on the main square. Located at the meeting point of three valleys, this charming town enjoys a Mediterranean climate – and the epithet ‘Pearl of the Dolomites’.

The location of Ufogel is such that, if you fancy venturing beyond the Austrian border, it won’t take too long at all. With Italy within an hour’s drive and Slovenia less than two, you could soon be enjoying even more of this region’s undiscovered beauty. Austria’s own spectacular national park, Hohe Tauern, is around 20 minutes north, and definitely one to plan into your stay.
