Truly amazing Trullo Fico can be found in Puglia’s Valle d’Itria, just 5km from the beautiful Old Town of Ostuni, known as the Citta Bianca, or ‘White Town’. This ancient stone house with private pool makes a wonderful base for exploring Southern Italy’s heel, where the good life rules every day of the week. Perfect for an off-season romantic weekend awy, as well as a high season family holiday to remember.
Architecture lovers will be in the right place at Trullo Fico, living under the original stone cones of this traditional Saracen Trullo. In recent times, the house was unoccupied for 30 years, but in 2009 saw a sympathetic renovation where contemporary interior design came to complement its beautiful arches. It’s a place you’ll wish you had discovered before - with its white stone patio, barbecue, pool, hot tub and outdoor dining area, there’s as much to enjoy outside as there is inside.
Views, you say? No problem… Trullo Fico is surrounded by olive groves, fields and colourful fruit trees. You can help yourself to lemons, limes, figs, peaches or whatever is in season. The Adriatic coast lies around 10km away, so a quick escape to a golden beach is always an option too.
Inside, you’ll find 3 double bedrooms, 2 wet rooms with power showers and 2 attractive reception rooms. All on one level, the Danish leather sofas, a cool kids’ room and designer furnishings from the likes of Philippe Starck give a modern, relaxed feel to the interiors. The rugged bare-stone walls add character, and the direct access to the spacious patio and pool makes lounging around at your leisure impossible to avoid. For true chill-out time, this place is hard to beat.
It’s well worth venturing into Ostuni, with its hilltop Old Town fortified by Ostuni’s ancient walls. Plenty of architectural interest here too, with the cathedral – built in the 1400s in late-Gothic style – featuring an 18th-century interior and Baroque chapels. Elsewhere, be sure to check out the Palazzo Municipale, Palazzo Vescovile and the Column of Sant’Oronzo – you won’t miss this impressive monument standing proud in the main square. There is a wonderful market in Ostuni on Saturday morning until 1pm, seling an array of fresh seasonal local produce.
The smaller but no less beautiful Brindisi town of Ceglie Messapica lies around 20 minutes’ drive away, another unspoilt centre in which to wander, dine and dream. It has a wide variety of restaurants, osterias, ice cream parlours and pizzerias.
Easy to reach from Brindisi Airport, and perfect for a cultural family getaway, it’s hard to find a reason not to experience the mighty fine Trullo Fico.
