If you’re looking to escape the daily grind, look no further than Treehotel: a modern eco-hotel where the rooms are built high into the forest canopy.
Treehotel consists of just 6 rooms and a sauna (well, it is in Sweden). Designed by some of Scandinavia’s leading architects, each room is completely unique. One looks just like a bird’s nest; another is completely mirrored to reflect the trees around it and blend seamlessly into the forest. That’s not to say that all the rooms merge harmoniously with the environment; the Blue Cone is painted (oddly) bright red, while one looks like a UFO hovering in the trees.
Each room/pod is suspended 4-6 meters above the ground. Some are reached by walkways and ramps, others by retractable ladders. Each has a large double bed, toilet and a living area for chilling out. Some have extra bedrooms or bunk beds built in and/or terraces to maximise the living space. Only the largest room, Dragonfly, which at 52m2 is suitable for conferences, has its own shower facilities.
Meals are served in Britta’s Pensionat 5 minutes from Treehotel (incidentally, this is also where you check in), a charming guesthouse with original furnishings from the 30s to 50s and a welcoming open fire. The food is traditional, local and as far as possible organic: so expect salmon, reindeer, moose and bear. You can also arrange special a la carte dining here, or for meals to be served in your treeroom if you prefer.
Activities at Treehotel change with the seasons. In winter you can take a dog sled across the frozen landscape, in summer why not paddle a kayak down the ever-present River Lule. Saddle up, either by horse or bike, to explore the forest year-round, or try your hand at fishing. But really, the Treehotel is the anti-activity holiday. The beauty here is the quiet, the nature and the time to rest. Speaking of which, guests can also pay a small extra fee to use the Tree Sauna, an idyllic spa space consisting of sauna, hot tub and relaxation area.
Treehotel is located in Harads, approximately 100km from Lulea (Kallax) airport. Harads is a small village of about 600 people, although there is a restaurant, shop and the aforementioned guesthouse.
