Formerly a gatehouse to Netherby Hall, Top Lodge is now a perfect getaway for two, offering couples an idyllic and romantic retreat in northern Cumbria. Recently refurbished, the cottage makes use of reclaimed wood and cosy features, offering a super-comfy base from which to explore the surrounding countryside.
Inside, the cottage has a calming atmosphere, allowing you to unwind in style. Sit in the cosy lounge, where a comfy loveseat is placed opposite a wood-burning fireplace. Throw some logs on the fire and delve into a good book, staying toasty and warm in front of the flames. There’s also another comfy seat in the bay window and some lovely lamps offer mood lighting that sets the scene for a delightful stay.
On warm days, you’ll want to head outside and make the most of your peaceful woodland setting. You can sit out on the private deck where there’s a BBQ for alfresco grilling and a cute dining table for two where you can settle in for a peaceful evening drink. Or, follow a magical woodland path and find the outdoor bath that sits beneath the trees and offers a luxurious place to unwind, relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine.
Back inside, the cottage has a lovely kitchen that's fully-equipped, making meal prep a breeze. And there’s a quaint dining area for meals inside on cooler days. For added convenience, you also have a boot room, where you can store coats and wellies after days out exploring the marvellous scenery around you.
Before bed, head to the king size bedroom where there’s a free-standing roll-top bath, offering yet another spot for incredible indulgent soaks. Then, when feeling all relaxed, hop into your luxurious bed for a truly peaceful night’s sleep.
When it comes to filling your days, there’s lots to see and do in the local area. Avid fishing enthusiasts will want to head to the nearby River Esk, which has a prolific run of salmon in the autumn and sea trout in the summer. If you venture further afield, you can explore stunning landscapes or head south to visit the Lake District National Park’s quieter northern fells for scenic hikes. Visit Carlisle Castle and the Tullie House Museum to learn about the area’s Roman and medieval history.
Speaking of history, you can also walk or cycle along Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nature lovers can enjoy birdwatching at Solway Coast AONB. Don’t miss charming market towns like Brampton or indulge in local produce at Penrith’s farmers’ markets.
