The details

There’s something wonderfully magical about lying beneath a clear dome and watching the stars twinkle overhead from the warmth of your bed. At Lough Mardal Lodge in Donegal, these beautiful Skydome yurts combine the romance of traditional nomadic living with cosy modern comforts, all surrounded by wild bogland, forest, mountains and the waters of Lough Mardal. Better still, the yurts are generously spaced, giving you plenty of peace and privacy during your stay.

Inside, the circular space feels wonderfully inviting, with wooden lattice walls, radial rafters and sustainably sourced reclaimed and upcycled furnishings adding plenty of character. At its heart is a luxurious five-star hotel grade super-king size bed, dressed in crisp white linen, a heavy duvet and Donegal tweed woollen blankets. Hot water bottles are also provided for extra warmth on cooler nights. Settle in beneath the covers, get the wood-burning stove crackling and gaze upwards through the clear skylight as darkness falls.

Each yurt also has an ensuite compost toilet, rechargeable lanterns and reading lights, while a secure locker gives you somewhere to store valuables and includes handy charging points. The yurts are designed for two adults as standard, but up to two additional single beds can be set up for children, making this a memorable option for small families too.

Step outside and your private deck is a lovely spot to soak up the extraordinary surroundings. Sit with a morning coffee as the landscape slowly wakes up or pour some wine in the evening and listen to the gentle soundtrack of the local wildlife. Guests also have full use of the communal Lodge building, including allocated fridge and storage space in the kitchen as well as plates, cups and utensils for self-catering stays. Optional breakfast, burger and DIY pizza packs can make mealtimes even easier.

There's also a superb lakeside wood-fired sauna that offers a relaxing wellness experience with panoramic views across the water, followed by an invigorating cold plunge in the lake. Free for all Donegal glamping guests, private 1.5-hour sessions can be booked on arrival.

When you fancy an adventure, there’s plenty to tempt you beyond your yurt. Surf lessons, stand-up paddleboarding on the lake or sea and beach horse riding can all be arranged during your stay. You’re also perfectly placed to discover Donegal’s spectacular north west coast, before returning to your secluded yurt, lighting the fire and spending another peaceful evening beneath those star-filled Irish skies.
