London’s east side gets a lot of column inches these days. But before all the cool kids gentrified Shoreditch and sent house prices in Hackney through the roof, there was Clerkenwell. Just east of the centre, but a world away from Soho, Clerkenwell was the original up-and-comer that mixed a formerly industrial inner-city location with fine dining and cool bars.
The Zetter hotel started life as a Victorian warehouse. Now it has been carefully carved into 59 quirky boutique rooms that vary in size from the compact ‘Guest Rooms’ to the swanky circular ‘Rooftop Deluxe’ split-level suites with views across the city. The corner location means light floods the smartly designed rooms, which are raised above the bland and beige norm with the addition of quirky flourishes, eccentric décor and thoughtful lighting.
This part of London is very special and is what gives the Zetter its edge. The pedestrianised Exmouth Market is full of quirky bars and world-renowned restaurants including Moro and the Exmouth Grill. Further towards the famous Smithfields market you’ll find the Michelin starred Club Gascon and carnivores’ favourite St John. The Barbican and Sadlers’ Wells are close to catch a show at, while nightowls will appreciate the proximity to Fabric, one of London’s most enduring superclubs.
During the day you can wander to the Museum of London, or explore the market at Spitalfields and the vibrant Brick Lane beyond. St Paul’s Cathedral and the river are a walk or short taxi ride away. The Zetter is close to Farringdon tube and overground station, which connects guests to the whole of London and offers easy connections to Gatwick Airport.
