An incredible place to experience the wonders of the outside world, The Secret Garden is both ecologically sound and packed with character. Located just north of Royston in Hertfordshire, amidst two acres of woodland, orchards and meadows, you are also within easy reach of Cambridge here.
As the name suggests, you will be spending much of your time at The Secret Garden out in the open. Hammocks and a swing pod are waiting for you, set among wild flowers and fruit trees… certainly a relaxing setting.
The covered kitchen and dining area features a carved wooden table and benches and simple cooking facilities, including a fire pit. Try adding something fragrant from the herb garden to your dish.
There’s another treat to come, in the form of the wood-fired hot tub. Clamber in and watch the stars, for a romantic evening you will remember. There is also a solar shower and toilet in the woodland spa area.
Your sleeping quarters, the cute bedroom, makes for cosy nights, decked out with solar-powered fairy lights. With a king-size bed, this earth-covered hideaway will also give you shelter if the weather turns for the worse.
The Secret Garden relies on natural resources to generate its own energy. Owners Simon and Jacqui aim to create a diverse eco-system on their smallholding with sustainability at the heart of the concept.
Around 15 miles from Cambridge, The Secret Garden is well-placed for days out to discover the university city. The cultural hub of the area, Cambridge is home to the Ruskin Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum and a host of entertainment venues, including the Corn Exchange, Cambridge Junction and the ADC, where the famous Footlights comedy team do their thing.
With a selection of pubs and restaurants, nearby Royston offers direct rail links to London King’s Cross in as little as 45 minutes, while closer attractions to tempt lovers of the outdoors include Hitchin Lavender Farm and Stotfold Nature Reserve – both within a 30-minute drive.
If you’re looking for a place which is both ‘green’ and gorgeous, The Secret Garden could be the one for you.

Leave a reviewWOW! Simon was so welcoming and friendly as soon as we arrived. He showed us around the secret garden and made everything clear. Everything was clean and tidy. My partner and myself had a lovely, romantic and peaceful get away. The hobbit hole was insulated and we didn't need any extra blankets etc. The hot tub was clean and got very hot which was amazing! Lots of wildlife at night which was lovely to listen too and to not hear any traffic etc. The only downside i would say would be the fridge/plug sockets were a short distance away so we had to keep going out of the garden. Will be recommending and booking again for sure!
