The Details

Tucked high among the trees in a private little forest just outside Oban, Roost is a beautifully reimagined 1600’s hayloft that feels both wildly secluded and wonderfully luxurious. Sunlight pours through skylights even on stormy days, warming the natural materials and handcrafted details that fill this one-of-a-kind retreat. From the deep stone resin bath set beneath the stars to the soft glow of the woodburner and the vintage vinyl spinning beside it, Roost is designed for deep rest, slow mornings and long, cosy evenings in the treetops.

The entire top floor of a historic stone stable, this atmospheric 80sqm loft has been lovingly crafted using oak, tweed and raw textures that echo its woodland surroundings. An open-plan layout creates an easy flow between the kitchen, living space and bedroom, where a king size bed is wrapped in a bespoke extended headboard of soft tweed, giving the room the feeling of a cushioned bower. The bathroom features a walk-in shower, while the striking full-length bath sits under a skylight with gauzy muslin curtains for privacy. It’s the perfect spot to soak while listening to the rain in the trees or the call of the owls who nest above in the ancient roost box on the roof.

Evenings are effortlessly relaxing here: light the woodburner, sink into the sofa and pull down the cinema screen for film nights, or set the mood with the turntable and a stack of good vinyl. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed by the owners, giving the space a sense of creativity, romance and quiet soul. Despite feeling deeply tucked away, you’re just a 20-minute walk from Oban’s waterfront, restaurants and ferries, making it easy to explore while still retreating to your private forest haven at the end of the day.

Step outside and Home Farm’s wooded glen feels peaceful and alive with nature. Deer graze between the trees, tawny owls call at dusk and red squirrels dart across branches overhead. Wander along the quiet country road into town for supplies, or head further afield for day trips to Mull, Iona or Fingal’s Cave. Whether you come for a weekend of cosy seclusion or an island-hopping escape, Roost offers a magical balance of comfort, history and wilderness on Scotland’s west coast.
