In the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, nationally renowned for their rugged beauty and dramatic scenery, stands The Old Chapel at East Witton. This former chapel has been lovingly renovated into a gorgeous two-storey self catering holiday cottage. With a unique décor which tastefully marries contemporary high-end amenities and furniture with the grandeur and elegance of the original church building, The Old Chapel is a truly unique place to stay when exploring Yorkshire.
Set in a spacious manicured garden, the Old Chapel is a freestanding building with its own entrance through the original chapel doorway. Both bedrooms are on the ground floor, each with an en-suite bathroom and freestanding bath tub. Up the central staircase, the open plan kitchen-cum-living room spans the full length and width of the building. A walkway separates the galleried space into two platforms, a high-end kitchen, bristling with sleek, modern appliances and surfaces, and light-filled living room, where an engineered wood-burning stove creates an atmosphere of post rambling cheer. Abundant soft seating faces the flat screen television.
This whole upstairs space benefits from the high ceilings of the chapel, and the untouched original fixtures of the building imbue the space with a sense of restrained authenticity. Overhead, dark stained beams contrast with the whitewashed finishes, and on all sides the light pours in through stained glass windows. Throughout The Old Chapel, the aesthetic emphasis is on minimalism, with uncluttered, light-filled space, clean, confident architectural lines, and classic, pleasing furniture.
Visitors to the Yorkshire Dales have historically been drawn by the breath-taking beauty of the district’s hills and valleys. Popular with walkers and artists, the area draws couples, groups of friends, and families from all over the UK and beyond. Guests at The Old Chapel are encouraged to visit the Jervaulx Abbey, the oldest intact abbey in the country, with delightful tearooms just across the road. Another must-see is the Forbidden Corner, an exceptional maze of tunnels, follies, chambers and mysteries, accompanied by a four acre garden and excellent café. The Blue Lion, an award-winning gastropub, is just a stone’s throw from the Old Chapel.

This beautiful new renovation is crying out for you to stay at least 3 nights. In high season minimum stay is 3 nights, however in the colder months we do accept 2 nights, you can huddle by the fire with lots of logs to keep burning.

Leave a reviewExcellent stay. Great pre-stay communications, and everything was very well organised (particularly in terms of COVID-19 response). We found the chapel comfortable, beautifully decorated and set in a lovely location. Have already recommended to family and friends, and would stay again

We have just had a lovely chilling break at the old chapel. The chapel has been lovingly restored to a very high standard. The beds are sooo comfy. East Witton is a lovely peaceful village. There are some lovely walks from the door, and lots of places to visit just 10/20 minutes drive away. We discovered Hackfall forest on our last day - a wonderful place to walk around. We will be back to the chapel - Georgina is a lovely host and very attentive when needed.

We stayed here for a few days in February (2 adults and 2 children) and had a wonderful time! The property itself was clean, warm and spacious and is ideally located to explore North Yorkshire. Georgina was really helpful and gave us a few tips and recommendations as we're not familiar with the area. Unfortunately, we were there just before a few places opened for Spring / Summer but there was enough sunshine for an ice cream at Brymor's! We'd definitely go back
