Open fields, vast starlit skies and the gentle soundtrack of grazing sheep set the scene at The Little Fold, a soulful, design-led farmhouse tucked away on a working Lakeland farm near Ambleside. From the moment you arrive, this is a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply and sink into the romance of life in the Lakes, with a touch of quiet luxury woven through every detail.
Reached via a peaceful country lane straight out of a Beatrix Potter tale, The Little Fold forms part of Skelwith Fold Farm, lovingly cared for by the same family since 1954. Stone-built and timeless, the house opens through a traditional stable door into warm, welcoming interiors where natural textures, soft Edwardian tones and countryside views create an instantly soothing atmosphere.
The ground floor is designed for easy family living. A cosy sitting room with an open fire is perfect for slow mornings and relaxed evenings, while Starlink WiFi keeps you connected without detracting from the rural feel. The light-filled kitchen is the heart of the house, spacious and sociable, with pastoral views from almost every angle and space to gather over breakfasts, snacks and long, lingering suppers. A generous dining room spills out to the patio for easy alfresco meals on warmer days, while practical touches like a utility room, dog wash and back porch make country life wonderfully straightforward.
Upstairs, the house unfolds into calm, characterful spaces. A snug with wood-burning stove and Juliet balcony is ideal for curling up after a day outdoors, while four beautifully styled bedrooms offer something for everyone. There are peaceful doubles with lovely views, a king size bedroom for restful nights and a much-loved children’s room with bunks, trundle bed and playful details that capture the magic of a proper holiday sleepover. Bathrooms are equally inviting, including a central family bathroom with a deep freestanding bath for indulgent soaks.
Outside, the magic continues. Children can roam freely in the spacious garden, discovering the Wendy house and play areas, while evenings are best spent under the stars in the six-person hot tub. During spring, lambs dot the surrounding fields and summer may bring sightings of friendly pygmy goats, adding to the gentle farmyard charm.
With walks from the doorstep to rivers, woodland and much-loved local pubs, and Ambleside and Windermere just moments away, The Little Fold is perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District. Whether you’re heading out on fell walks, cycling quiet lanes or simply pottering between cafes and shops, this is a warm, authentic base to return to at the end of each day.
