Just a short drive from the crashing surf and sandy beaches of the North Devon coastline and the wilderness of atmospheric Exmoor, The Hut at Lower Birch Farmhouse is perfectly located for exploring this stunning section of the British Isles. This traditional shepherds hut sits amongst the wild flowers of a pretty pasture and boasts lovely views across the woods and fields of the Devonshire countryside.
Clad with corrugated tin with a little chimney puffing clouds of smoke, this cute tiny house is a romantic retreat where couples can unwind, relax and enjoy uninterrupted time together. Inside, the hut is filled with fun touches, from the bright blues of the kitchen and bedroom to the set of Buckaroo on the shelf and the retro 'hen on nest' for storing those freshly laid eggs.
A space-saving fold-up table and stools can be set-up for meal times and the modern kitchen is suitably equipped for putting together light lunches and simple suppers. In the corner, sitting on the reclaimed-timber flooring, is a cosy wood burner and a basket filled with logs to keep the hut snug and warm, whatever the weather is doing outside. And, during those long, warm summer months, step out into the meadow and relax in the Adirondack chairs by the fire pit, which comes with a barbecue grill, and make the most of every moment in this beautiful spot. The dark Devon skies are a real treat for stargazers and guests can gaze-away, lost in thought, interrupted only by the occasional swoop of a bat or hoot of an owl.
At bedtime, the cosy king size bed offers a restful sleep on a luxurious hypnos mattress dressed with crinkled flax linen sheets, a cosy duvet and woollen blankets. Guests will love waking up and pulling back the curtain to the window at the foot of the bed, revealing spectacular views and letting in warm rays of sunlight. Take a relaxing shower in the modern ensuite bathroom before breakfast and make plans for the rest of the day.
Grab the binoculars and head down to the stream, maybe spot a Kingfisher amongst the dragonflies, while the buzzards circle above. Lucky guests may encounter the herd of wild deer who often wander across the land. Or explore further afield for a surf lesson on Croyde beach or cycle the Tarka Trail. And for eating out, there are some lovely pubs a short distance away including The Pyne Arms at East Down and The Black Venus at Challacombe or enjoy some fine dining at the Coachhouse at Kentisbury Grange.
