The Elmfield is a gorgeous 19th-century house, originally built as a gentlemen’s residence, complete with market garden and orangery. Located in the charming seaside town of Ilfracombe on the coast of North Devon, the house has a fascinating history. During the second world war, The Elmfield was used as a school for some of the children evacuated from London and was then converted into a hotel in the ’60s. It’s now a self-catering party house which can sleep up to 20 guests and has a swimming pool and its own private bar.
Step into the house and you’ll find the decor is an eclectic mix of contemporary styling with features such as the grand four-poster beds harking back to its Victorian origins. There are nine elegant and individually styled bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. Every bedroom has its own distinct character, for example, on the top floor, you’ll find a bright and airy room, decorated in light colours and with a contemporary feel. Head downstairs and you’ll come across a room with a magnificent carved bed frame and a chandelier.
The house features some fantastic rooms for entertaining, such as the Soho-style basement bar. Pull up a stool or relax on one of the leopard print sofas with a cocktail in hand and swap stories of the day’s adventures. There’s also a lounge with big, comfy sofas and a large dining room with enough space around the table for all the guests. You’ll also find a table and chairs in the catering-style kitchen so everyone can help out when it comes to dinner time.
If you find yourself in need of a little peace and quiet, there is a cosy book nook with some armchairs where you can put your feet up and relax with a novel. In the garden, you’ll find the covered pool house with a 10m swimming pool which is heated all year round and there is also a playroom for the kids with table football.
With less than a 10-minute walk down to the sea and Ilfracombe’s picturesque harbour, The Elmfield is perfectly located for exploring the town and the surrounding area. There’s plenty to do, from surfing at the local beaches to visiting Ilfracombe Aquarium. The more adventurous might want to have a go at coasteering or even wakeboarding, while the rest of your party might prefer to visit one of the local art galleries or watch the boats bobbing in the harbour from the comfort of a coffee shop. There are also some fantastic restaurants in and around the town, such as Espresso Seafood which serves up the best fish dishes around and The Olive Room which has been awarded a Michelin Star.
