Both of these charming properties are upside-down with the living areas on the first floor to make the most of the stunning views of the countryside and the sea. They would be perfect for a big family get together of up to 10, or a group of friends wanting to explore this gorgeous region of Scotland.
The Barracks is the larger of the two properties and sleeps eight whilst the quirky Doocot sleeps two in a cosy haven. Both houses date back to the 18th century and are filled with original features and stunning details. The Doocot was once a dovecot and the hosts have kept the beautiful stone nesting boxes and repurposed them as bookshelves and ornament holders.
Upon arrival you can all gather together in the fabulous and vast kitchen and dining room in The Barracks. The dual aspect room is flooded with light and very spacious with a fully-equipped modern kitchen where you can enjoy a welcome drink and make plans for dinner.
There's a large farmhouse kitchen table, which will comfortably seat everyone and it's a fabulous place to enjoy a celebratory meal or a big busy breakfast. The Doocot has its own kitchen and dining area with a table for two by the old nesting boxes for those romantic couples who fancy a little alone time.
Evenings can be spent in the main living room, which is elegantly decorated and has an open fire to keep everyone toasty, warm and cosy as you watch a movie together on the 32” Smart TV. There's also an upright electric piano should you all fancy a little singalong! A second snug living room has more comfy furniture and another TV ideal for the kids or anyone wanting to catch up on sports. The Doocot also has its own cosy living room with a TV.
When everyone is ready for bed you'll find four bedrooms downstairs in The Barracks and one king size bedroom in the Doocot. This bedroom is unique and rather special with the two-metre long bed nestled under a vaulted ceiling covered in shimmering stars and constellations, a treat for anyone lucky enough to nab it! This room also has ensuite facilities separate from The Barracks. But the four bedrooms in The Barracks are also luxurious and spacious with one king size bedroom with its own ensuite facilities and French doors leading to the garden. A second king size room with French doors, a lovely double room and a twin which would be ideal for children or friends sharing.
The Barracks has a family bathroom with a shower over the bath, and an additional walk-in shower room so there shouldn't be too much hanging about in the morning.
Once everyone is up and refreshed you can gather together in the kitchen for breakfast, or head out into the garden and enjoy your coffee on the terrace with the sound of the birds to greet you. The Doocot has French windows opening on to a shared courtyard, but they will benefit from The Barracks garden most in its gorgeous setting.
For nature and sea lovers this really is the most fantastic base. Just over the road from the properties is the Gillingshill Reservoir which has a variety of water fowl, including coots, little grebes and swans. It's a lovely place to wander in the misty morning and a good place to stretch the dog's legs. Feel free to explore the grounds too but bring boots as there are no footpaths.
Kellie Castle is worth a visit and you can treat yourself to an afternoon tea there too! A short four miles away you'll find the old harbour village of Pittenween which is utterly charming. Watch the fishing boats come in and purchase some of the freshest fish for supper. Take your time strolling around the old lanes and treat yourself to an ice cream or a coffee. If it's the sea you're after the Fife Coastal Path will take you along pretty coves, sandy beaches and some delightful old fishing villages.
For a day of shopping and bars make the short 20-minute drive to the popular tourist location of St Andrews which is full of historic buildings, a harbour and another sandy beach.
