Luxury Scandinavian-style tree house in a magical Somerset natural setting
Who didn’t dream of a night in a tree house when they were young? The Bird House, nestled in magical Somerset woodland and clad in local cedar, offers the thrill of being surrounded by nature in a way that is most definitely for grown-ups.
This quirky escape is in fact the newest addition to a small idyllic yurt Glamping site near Crewkerne. On arrival you’ll be guided to a gate set into a hornbeam hedge. Step through it into a peaceful clearing and you get your first view of your truly unique hideaway. Raised on tree-trunk stilts, the house, with its large round window, really does resemble a very beautiful bird box. A wide staircase leads you up to the L-shaped deck, where a breakfast table is perfectly positioned to allow you to sit and take in your tranquil surroundings.
At the top of the steps the front door opens into a Scandinavian-style interior that would make for a blissful retreat in itself. Curved white walls and pale wood floors give a cool, contemporary feel to the open-plan space, and the carefully chosen mid-century accessories add pops of colour. Light floods in from the roof windows, and your eyes are lifted to the trees all around you.
The living area is simple and uncluttered, with a sleek leather sofa and a table for two. The fully equipped, bespoke kitchen is clad in 80-year-old boards reclaimed from the parachute regiment nissen huts on Salisbury Plain.
However you choose to spend your day, you can finish it by climbing between the soft cotton sheets of your comfortable, handmade bed, listening to the sounds of the forest as you drift off to sleep. In the morning you can step under the rainfall shower in the stylish adjacent bathroom.
The local area has plenty to offer too. Crewkerne and nearby Yeovil are handsome market towns, and it’s only a 30-minute drive to Lyme Regis and the spectacular Jurassic coast. You can stock up on supplies in the local Waitrose, but if you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else there just happens to be an award-winning gastro pub about a mile away.
