Spring Cottage was designed to be a fun, romantic bolthole for couples wanting to escape the city and have a bit of rest and relaxation. The bedroom is large and luxurious, with a huge super-king bed and sumptuous white linen. This opens up, through French windows, onto a verandah with a table and chairs where you can make the most of the lovely woodland views. There is also a freestanding cast iron bathtub at the foot of the bed for indulgent soaks and a lovely shower and downstairs loo.
The cottage has a cosy hygge-style sitting room with a wood-burning stove in the ancient fireplace - the owners supply a basket of logs and kindling - so you can stay toasty and warm whatever the weather outside. There’s a cosy sofa, armchair, window seat and a dining table (which is also a chess/draughts table) chairs, books, games and an Alexa speaker.
The kitchen is well-equipped with a cooker, hob, dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine, microwave, cookery books and all the pots and pans you need for a happy weekend away. There is also a small BBQ outside, through the back stable door.
The cottage has a dreamy location right next to the National Trusts’ Buzzards Wood. This is such a natural haven; the wild flowers are amazing, wild garlic grows in profusion, there are incredible butterflies, amazing birdlife- including soaring Buzzards and sometimes you can spot red deer. The bird song is incredible and at night the owls just hoot for fun.
There’s plenty to do in the area, and some guests find they never need to leave the valley and surrounding woods. Many bring bikes, others set off with OS maps in hand, and some simply stroll to one of the local pubs - The Cadeleigh Arms, Fisherman’s Cot or the Ring of Bells.
For those looking to explore further, the house makes a great base for discovering the many delights of Devon. Nearby attractions include the scenic Great Western Canal with its horse-drawn barge, the grand estates of Knightshayes and Killerton House and the historic cathedral city of Exeter, just 15 miles away.
Bickleigh offers family fun with its railway, traditional cream teas and access to the Exe Valley Way. For day trips, the wild beauty of Exmoor and Dartmoor awaits. If it’s the coast you’re after, there are plenty of options: Exmouth for a classic beach day, Saunton Sands for surfing, Braunton Burrows for stunning dog walks and charming seaside towns like Clovelly, Budleigh Salterton and Beer - all perfect for a relaxed outing.
