Experience the wonders of the Peak District at this impressive barn conversion - with village pubs nearby, countryside views and a beautiful garden with barbecue
Wonderfully spacious and exquisitely styled, Shippon Barn is located in the pretty Peak District village of Great Longstone. Around three miles from Bakewell, it makes a magnificent holiday home for up to eight guests and is within easy reach of local treasures, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.
The village location puts Shippon Barn within walking distance of cosy pubs and a useful general store. The beautiful surrounding countryside is a bonus too – you have views over a field from the back garden of this former cattle barn, which has undergone quite a transformation.
A large, wooden-beamed lounge provides you with a comfortable seating area facing an original fireplace. There is now a warming log-burner there, which should keep you feeling snug on winter nights in, watching the 48-inch TV with Freesat channels and DVD. If you want a little privacy, there’s also a snug just off the main living room with a view out to the garden.
A seriously good-looking kitchen offers all the necessities, including a dining table and chairs. For a more formal dinner or just a larger group, there’s another stunning dining area with seating for eight. Just off the kitchen, there’s a downstairs utility room and cloakroom where both you and your laundry can freshen up.
Don’t miss out on the gorgeous master bedroom with en suite – a very attractive place to spend a lazy Sunday morning. There’s a second double bedroom, a twin bedroom with bunk beds, and a family bathroom – and if your group extends beyond six, a couple of sofa-beds in the lounge and sung to accommodate another two people.
Shippon Barn is just a short drive from picturesque Bakewell, where riverside walks and portions of Bakewell Pudding are a must. You will find plenty of great places for your main course too, and you’re never far from a tea room or tempting bakery.
Just outside Bakewell, the medieval stately home, Haddon Hall, is certainly worth a visit. Like the more famous Chatsworth House, just a few miles away, it has beautiful gardens to enjoy. If you’ve got the energy, check out the Monsal Trail which follows the path of an old railway line all the way to Blackwell Mill, over eight miles away – a scenic challenge for walkers or cyclists.
The spa town of Buxton is only 20 minutes’ drive away, home of underground caves, while the Heights of Abraham in Matlock takes things to the other extreme with its cable cars offering bird’s eye views of the Peak District.
