Escape to the tranquillity of Quinta do Areal, a beautifully restored historic Portuguese farm near Lousã, surrounded by 13 hectares of lush gardens, orchards and rolling pastures. Just 30 minutes from the ancient university city of Coimbra, this peaceful sanctuary blends rustic charm with contemporary comfort, offering an inspiring space for rest, renewal and connection.
Set within the century-old farmhouse, this self-catering apartment sleeps 2–4 guests across two double (or twin) bedrooms and a stylish bathroom with walk-in shower. The open-plan living area is warm and welcoming, with a fully equipped kitchen, large sofa and dining space that opens onto your own private terrace for relaxed alfresco breakfasts. Natural light, tactile materials and heritage touches create a calm, homely feel where you can truly unwind.
Days here unfold at a slower rhythm. Wander through olive groves and flower-filled gardens, pick seasonal fruit and vegetables, or collect fresh eggs for your dinner table. Cool off in one of the estate’s three swimming pools – a natural swimming pond, a saltwater pool and a heated indoor pool with sauna – or soak beneath the stars in the wood-fired hot tub (just allow 24 hours for it to warm). For deeper rejuvenation, join a yoga class, meditate in the tranquil yoga yurt, or stretch on the open-air deck surrounded by birdsong.
Guests can also enjoy a wealth of holistic therapies, from shiatsu and ayurvedic yoga massage to deep tissue massage and sound healing. One massage per guest is included in your stay, with the option to create your own private retreat, adding guided hikes, personal training, or mountain biking through the Serra da Lousã’s scenic trails. Fast WiFi means you can work remotely if needed – or simply turn it off to fully disconnect and recharge.
Sustainability lies at the heart of Quinta do Areal. The farm is largely self-sufficient, powered by solar panels and a wood-burning boiler using its own timber, with an eco sewage treatment plant, reed beds, natural cleaning products and comprehensive recycling.
Venture beyond the farm to explore the stone “schist” villages of the Serra da Lousã or lose yourself in Coimbra’s cobbled streets before returning for a sunset yoga session or quiet evening beneath the trees. Quinta do Areal is a rare kind of retreat – where comfort, nature and calm coexist in perfect harmony.
