The detail

Portman House, located amongst the rolling hills of the Somerset countryside near the village of Pylle, is perfect for a stylish country getaway with family or friends. The house is set on a high point overlooking its large enclosed garden and out to the fields beyond and offers plenty of peace and quiet throughout your stay. Step in through the grand Georgian entryway and you’ll find an interior that shows off the building’s historic character while adding plenty in the way of contemporary luxury. The high ceilings, chandeliers and open fireplace in the drawing room are set alongside comfy modern furnishings and top-of-the-range appliances. After a day enjoying walks with panoramic views or exploring the historic city of Wells, Portman House is the perfect place to relax in front of a roaring fire or even in the hot tub.

The ground floor of the house features big living spaces, ideal for entertaining. Those high ceilings and big windows help the interior feel bright and spacious during the day, while soft lighting from the chandeliers creates a cosy atmosphere as evening draws in. The contemporary kitchen is equipped with everything you’ll need to cater for large groups, including a range cooker and additional ovens and hobs. Enjoy a light lunch at the kitchen table or move through to the more formal dining room for big family dinners.

In the evenings, gather everyone together for a board game in the drawing room in front of an open fire. There’s also a smaller living room just in case you fancy a quiet evening with a book or a film with the wood burner keeping you cosy. If cocktails are in order, the cellar features its own bar and there’s even a karaoke machine.

The first of the bedrooms is located on the ground floor and there’s a bathroom with a large walk-in shower just across the hall. Head upstairs to find the other five bedrooms and three bathrooms on the first floor. There’s a super-king size bed in the main bedroom, two roll top baths and fantastic views from all of the windows. There are three double rooms and three twins with the option of adding another two Z beds so up to 14 guests can comfortably be accommodated.

The large enclosed garden is a lovely spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon in the sunshine. Rustle up some treats for the BBQ from the farm shop a short walk away and relax in the hot tub while you soak up the view. There’s also a games room with a pool table, darts and a table tennis table to keep you entertained.

There’s plenty of exploring to do in the area, whether you prefer long walks in the countryside, some sightseeing or a bit of retail therapy. The town of Glastonbury and the charming cathedral city of Wells are both nearby, both with fascinating histories to discover. Take a stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens of Hestercombe House or surround yourself with nature with a walk along part of the Fosse Way. Head a little further afield and enjoy an afternoon’s shopping at the famous Clarks Village or pack a picnic and go for a walk around Chew Valley Lake.
