This architect designed and restored palazzo offers a romantic slice of Italian history and would be perfect for friends or family seeking an idyllic escape in a tranquil environment.
The building is nestled in the heart of the small village of Neviano (Nianu to the locals) and you enter in to a hallway with vaulted ceilings, original columns and patina walls. The space is elegant and cool but with a distinct feel of the past enveloping you. The concept behind the design was to reveal its beauty, rather than modernise it completely, and this is evident all around.
Head up the lovely staircase where you'll find the dining room with its original tiled floor, pale blue vaulted ceiling, a locally crafted travertine dining table seating eight and lamps that were once fishing baskets. Chairs, paintings and decorative objects dotted around are all vintage and the space is charming, central to the home and ideal for long suppers on cool evenings. The house has several levels with many windows showing off spectacular views of the church and surrounding landscape.
The kitchen is custom made and has everything you could need to create an Italian feast and there's an additional outdoor dining area with another eight seater table shaded by a pergola where you can spend warm nights drinking fine wines and eating pasta, cheese and other delights.
When it's time for bed you have three fabulous rooms to choose from. The Master suite on the rear side of the palazzo has a large comfortable bed, its own en suite and the delicious smell of the orange garden nearby suffusing the room. The Blue room faces the street and has a large balcony where you can watch the locals come and go. It has a blue star vaulted ceiling above the double bed and plenty of room for storage. The White room also has a blue star vaulted ceiling and a comfy bed with a bench beneath the window where you can sit and read whilst enjoying the sun on your face.
All of the rooms have been kept simple in their decoration to allow the architecture to be the main star but they all have a mixture of modern furnishings creating warm light and a cosy vibe in the evening. The hosts have their own bespoke linens with a choice of soft and harder pillows to suit your preference.
There's a shared bathroom that manages to be both ancient and very minimalist and modern with an old planter as sink and a walk-in shower with copper fittings. Natural soap and shampoo is complimentary and the hosts have thoughtfully provided a robes and towels.
If you fancy a little alone time there's also a small reading room with a triangular masonry seat nestled by a fire place.
Arguably the most stunning addition to the palazzo is its roof top garden with a private stone plunge pool and plenty of shaded sun beds and soft furnishings. It's the perfect place to enjoy the BBQ and sit around the brazier after a long day of doing nothing much at all, with a bottle of prosecco and maybe even some limoncello. And if you choose to greet the morning sun, yoga mats have been provided.
Locally there's much to see and do, from the Piazza Fortunato Cesari to the Sant'Eleuterio Hill Bike Park, with one of the top local attractions being Castello di Gallipoli. For eating out you'll find the nearby Li Frizzuli restaurant a great choice for traditional Italian food and a mile or so further out Masseria Palmento. For coffee or a tipple why not try Bar Aragona. And if the ocean calls, head down to Porto Selvaggio for sunsets.
