The details

Bold sustainable architecture meets Hebridean soul at The Old Post Office, Leverburgh – a striking, design-led holiday cottage for two in the Isle of Harris. Wrapped in rust-red cladding and crowned with a timber-framed upper storey, this reimagined former post office has been thoughtfully transformed into a spacious 100 sq m retreat that feels anything but small. Inside, mid-century style, handcrafted details and glorious natural light combine to create a stay that is as inspiring as the landscape beyond your windows.

Enter via the double height atrium and climb the staircase to the expansive open plan living space, where an entire glazed frontage frames views across the village mill pond to the Sound of Harris. On summer evenings you might spot salmon and sea trout leaping as the light softens over the water. To the rear, a fully glazed terrace door opens onto your private deck and fenced garden, with mountain views and morning sunshine that makes breakfast alfresco a daily ritual. A bridge leads directly to common grazing land, inviting spontaneous walks into the South Harris hills and towards the Obbe loch system.

The handmade plywood kitchen, complete with central island, is a joy for cooks keen to make the most of local seafood and island produce. After dinner, sink into the generous king size bed, dressed in beautifully woven HARRIS TWEED® and complemented by carefully curated mid-century pieces from Ercol, G-Plan and Beaver and Tapley. The ensuite bathroom is a true highlight, featuring a rain shower and a deep Japanese-style soaking tub made for long, candlelit evenings for two.

Modern comforts are seamlessly woven in, from Dualit, DeLonghi and Bosch appliances to satellite smart TV, Apple TV, Bluetooth speaker and fast fibre WiFi. Solar thermal hot water and whole-building heat recovery keep things cosy and efficient, while a 7 kW EV charger makes exploring by electric car effortless.

Set in the heart of Leverburgh, you’re moments from the village shop and café, and just a short drive from Harris’ famed white sand beaches and the dramatic Bays. Walk to St Clement’s Church in Rodel, hike Roineabhal, hop on the ferry to the Uists or raise a glass at the Isle of Harris Brewery. However you spend your days, returning to The Old Post Office will always feel like coming home.
