Learn moreMillie The Hut is a bit special and has an enchanted feel about it. The hut is nestled in a sunny meadow with a clear babbling brook running beside it and a separate little shack where you can dine alfresco, regardless of the weather.
You arrive via a leafy lane, across a Victorian railway bridge where steam trains once ran, and find yourself in a wonderful meadow with the Hindwell Brook running behind a charming black shepherd's hut with a small shack to its side, open but covered, providing extra space to dine in comfort with the stars for company.
Inside you'll find a timeless space furnished with repurposed, recycled and upcycled items that create a cheerful, warm and welcoming environment. There's a small kitchenette with all the basics including a microwave and hob and a small table where you can eat on chillier nights.
Tucked away in an alcove is a very comfy bed where you can snuggle up and doze off to the sound of the river and the glow of the wood burner for company. The bathroom is surprisingly spacious for a shepherd's hut and has a good shower with plenty of hot water and some complimentary toiletries for you to make use of.
In fact everything in this hut is just right, but it's the outside that makes it something unique. The clear water of the brook (lovingly referred to as 'Millie's Beach') is suitable for wild swimming – what a way to start the day! - and if you're so inclined you can spot, and maybe catch, some crayfish too. Having the water nearby elevates the experience of staying in this pretty meadow and the hosts have made the most of this feature so that you can enjoy it whatever the weather.
Next to the hut is a truly delightful little shack, like a theatre set, with art on the wall, copper kettles lining the shelves, glowing lamps, lots of little ornaments and strings of fairy lights surrounding a romantic dining table for two. You can BBQ, or cook your dinner on the fire pit using the tripod, and then sit at the opening of the shack with the stars above as you languish over a long lazy dinner with plenty of wine. Afterwards, grab some blankets and cosy up around the large fire pit, by the edge of the river, and toast some marshmallows for dessert. It really couldn't be more idyllic.
During the day there are beach chairs that you can relax in by the water with a good book, and the hosts have provided board games and cards so you can unplug if you want to, and just be present.
The surrounding woods are full of wildlife and you'll hear owls, spot some kites above and enjoy the sheep staring back at you from across the meadow.
If you can bring yourself to venture out you'll be within easy walking distance of Presteigne, where you'll find The Salty Dog greengrocers/fishmongers, Carini’s butchers shop and Deli-Tinto. Presteigne Farmers Market is held on the first Saturday of each month and there's a fantastic coffee shop - The Workhouse Gallery. For bigger shopping you might like to travel to Ludlow and enjoy a walk about.
The hosts recommend a takeaway to enjoy in your shack from Daphne's (amazing pizza!) and fish and chips from Victoria Fish bar. And for dining further afield, The Cider Barn comes very highly recommended.
There are some lovely walks such as Hergest Ridge, which has Offa’s Dyke running through it, which offers some memorable views so be sure to take a camera. Hay on Wye is nearby as is Ludlow and both are well worth a visit.

Leave a reviewAn absolutely wonderful two nights in this cosy little shepherds hut. The log burner inside the hut makes it warm in the morning and evening. And sitting out during the day a firepit to keep you warm if the weather isn’t behaving. The welcome information was brilliant and the guest hamper was a lovely touch. Most of basics provided, any extras you thought you needed have already been thought of. I took myself here to get away and relax by myself and there is plenty of privacy. 4g phone signal too :) comfy bed inside with feather down quilt and extra blankets. It was excellent!
