The details
A hot tub overlooking the water, a fire waiting to be lit and glorious natural surroundings: the Lodges at Ballyburren make a persuasive case for clearing the diary.
The three timber A-frame lodges are winners of the prestigious five-star rating from Tourism NI. Choose between Rockwater, Pineview and Bluebell, each with its own private and secluded location. Set within an 18-acre estate of rewilded ponds, woodlands and waterways, they offer a luxurious and peaceful countryside escape just for two.
Inside, huge glass frontages bring the outdoors into the open-plan living space. There’s a sofa for lazy afternoons, a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings and a fully equipped kitchen for cooking together. Make coffee, linger over breakfast or put on a favourite film once darkness falls. Underfloor heating adds warmth throughout, while fast WiFi makes streaming easy.
Each bedroom sits on a mezzanine beneath the pitched roof, with views from both the front and rear. Downstairs, the bathroom has a shower and heated towel rail. Outside, the decking is made for long soaks in the wood-fired hot tub, with seating and a barbecue area giving you every reason to turn dinner into an outdoor affair.
Rockwater Lodge
Perched on a rocky outcrop, Rockwater looks across Ballyburren’s largest pond towards an old stone cottage beyond. Its open outlook makes the water the centrepiece of your stay, whether you’re enjoying a quiet morning inside or settling into the hot tub as evening draws in.
Pineview Lodge
Nestled between mature pine trees beside a smaller pond and an old stone wall, Pineview has a wonderfully tucked-away woodland feel. With leafy views front and rear, it’s an inviting choice for afternoons with a book, dinner for two and long evenings soaking outside among the trees.
Bluebell Lodge
The highest of the three lodges, Bluebell sits in its own garden, with little steps leading through the grounds and views towards the smaller pond. In spring, bluebells bring a splash of colour to the setting, while the private deck and hot tub make it a lovely retreat throughout the year.
There’s a thoughtful story behind the setting, too. Owners Damien and Claire Butler restored ponds, reopened streams and planted thousands of trees to create Ballyburren. Today, a 1.4km trail threads through its woodland, farmland and wetlands, crossing timber bridges along the way. It’s a lovely excuse to stretch your legs without reaching for the car keys.
For some particularly charming walking company, book a guided alpaca trek. The route includes a stop at a coffee trailer on a small island, where drinks and traybakes await. You can also add a picnic hamper to selected treks, while bookable yoga and treatments offer the perfect way to unwind during your stay.
Further afield, the beautiful Mourne Mountains are just a 15 minute drive. Wander through Tollymore or Castlewellan Forest Park, or make for Newcastle for a day beside the sea. Belfast is also within easy reach if you fancy some city exploring. Then it’s back to your own little waterside retreat, with the rest of the evening all to yourselves.
