Enjoy a rural retreat in a repurposed Post Office building in the beautiful Isle of Harris in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. This rustic retreat is unique and characterful and offers a great base from which to explore this marvellous island, that is known for its gorgeous beaches, wonderful walking trails and its history for arts and crafts. Add to this the distilleries, making fantastic Scottish whisky, and you’ve got the foundations for an amazing holiday.
This former Post Office building became redundant in 2017 and has now been repurposed into a comfy, quirky holiday home. The pre-existing concrete structure has been insulated and clad in distinctive rust red cement board panels. The owners have also added a cracking first floor timber-framed extension, which adds to the space of the home.
Inside, the double-height atrium welcomes you in. Take the winding staircase up to the main living space, which offers up lovely views over the village pond. The living room has a stylish sofa and two matching chairs, where you can sit with a good book or just enjoy the view with your loved one. This space also features a smart TV, should you wish to settle in for a movie night or box set marathon.
The adjoining kitchen/dining space features hand-made plywood cabinets and has a central island with seating. This means you can perch here with your morning coffee or enjoy meals prepared in the nicely equipped kitchen. There’s also a terrace door here that opens up onto a large, raised deck area complete with seating. This is the perfect spot to enjoy an evening drink as you take in the fantastic mountain views up to the summit of Roneabhal.
When the night rolls in, the property has a comfy double bed that offers yet more lovely views through its skylight-style windows. The ensuite bathroom features a large walk-in rain shower and there’s a separate Japanese style soaking tub that’s big enough for two.
Guests also have access, via a bridge, to the common grazing land behind the property, which is the starting point to some delightful walks to the South Harris hills and the Obbe loch system, where fishing can be arranged. You’re also just 300m from the Leverburgh Community Shop (An Clachan), which has a wide selection of groceries, baked goods, fresh vegetables and local produce.
The Loft is close to the sheltered inlet of Port Eisgein, which is located on former crofted land, and offers a unique, isolated cliff top location, where you can enjoy the view in peace and tranquillity. Lovers of the great outdoors will adore the Isle of Harris, with its many amazing beaches and stunning scenery, all of which is just waiting to be explored. So be sure to bring your walking boots!
