Europe doesn’t get much more northerly than the location of Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, one of Finland’s most incredible finds. Fancy a snowy Lapland adventure with a great chance of spotting the Northern Lights? Look no further than the resort’s West Village, 250km north of the Arctic Circle, where you can snuggle down in a cute and cosy heated igloo.

Your igloo accommodation, constructed from Lapland’s unique Kelo pinewood, features a kitchenette, toilet, fireplace and an inviting bedroom. Each igloo has a glass roof, so you can watch the snow fall as you drift off to sleep, and even a private sauna.

Smaller igloos are perfect for 2, while larger ones can accommodate 4 or 6. On-site facilities include the world’s largest smoke sauna, just one of several at the resort. Once you have indulged in this typically Finnish experience, you may want to take a dip in a cooling spring. They will cut a hole in the ice if it has frozen over, and the water is so pure you can even drink it!

Also available are shower blocks and some excellent restaurants. This is a big site, so you may need to walk for a little bit, but the hunger you build up will be very satisfied indeed. In the West Village, you’ll find the Aurora restaurant, complete with Glass Igloo Bar, and elsewhere, Korsu, the ‘Underground’ restaurant, the Smoke Sauna Restaurant and the traditional Kelo. Local specialities like reindeer and char-grilled salmon crop up on the menus.

Come Christmas time, there’s the added bonus that you might spot someone you should definitely recognise… Santa’s Celebration House is the largest log building in the country and during the year it hosts all kinds of events, from weddings to concerts and large-scale dining. Santa’s chalet across the river is the place to go for an audience with the man himself.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is just as magical during the summer – the spectacular landscapes will enchant you even without the snow. Take a hike and make the most of the endless daylight, jump on a husky-drawn sleigh, go panning for gold or cruise your way through Lemmenjoki National Park. Staff can arrange all kinds of excursions and activities whatever the time of year, and their expert local knowledge will guide you to some incredible discoveries. The area’s opportunities for snow-sports, including cross-country skiing, snowboarding and ice-fishing, are unrivalled.

With so many possibilities, and a character all of its own, Kakslauttanen delivers an unforgettable stay from start to finish.
