Tucked away in an area of old oak woodland in Devon, you’ll find a beautiful handcrafted dome, or ‘Truffle’. It’s one of five scattered through a peaceful patch of woodland with ancient trees and hedge banks and a thriving community of wildlife thanks to the owners’ diversification and restocking programme. This is the perfect spot to unplug for a while, relaxing in a hammock beneath the trees or toasting marshmallows over a campfire as you reconnect with nature. Spend your days exploring the woodland and venturing over to nearby Heatherleigh, the smallest town in Devon, where you can pick up supplies at the farm shop, visit the local pottery and art gallery or tuck into a pub lunch. You’ll also have the dramatic landscapes of Dartmoor on your doorstep and the coast less than an hour away.
Each of the wooden panels that make up the structure of the dome has been cut and prepared in Heatherleigh and then assembled on site in the woodland. Inside you’ll find a cosy space set up with a super-comfy double bed. There’s a wood burning stove to keep the space toasty on chillier evenings, along with winter duvets, blankets and hot water bottles. Curved windows on either side let in the lovely natural light filtered through the tree canopy above. After a long walk on Dartmoor or day at the coast, you’ll be able to snuggle up in one of the armchairs with a book or snooze in the hammock.
Outside the Truffle, you’ll find your own covered cooking area with an Aquaforno, a combined BBQ, pizza oven and smoker, meaning you’ll easily be able to rustle up a wide range of meals. There’s also a kettle and a gas burner so you can make hot drinks and quick snacks without firing up the Aquaforno or you could cook directly over the fire pit. You’ll find your sink, food prep area and fridge a short walk away near your bathroom. The bathroom itself is equipped with a flushing loo and a hot shower with eco toiletries provided. In the evenings, get the fire pit going and sit out with a mug of hot chocolate as the stars appear through the trees.
To manage waste in an eco-friendly manner, the owners have a willow wastewater system. They have planted/installed this to help reduce the impact on the environment. If it’s treated well it will look after your natural waste in an environmentally low impact and responsible way.
If you can tear yourself away from your peaceful woodland hideaway, there’s plenty of exploring to be done. The location in the heart of Devon means you’re within easy reach of Dartmoor National Park as well as the spectacular coastlines of North Cornwall and Devon. Enjoy long walks in the National Park and along the coast or paddle gently down the River Dart in a canoe.
Okehampton, known as ‘the gateway to Dartmoor’, is a short drive away with independent shops and a butcher where you can get some supplies to cook back at your Truffle. The ancient fishing village of Clovelly is 40 minutes away in the car and if you fancy a change of pace, Exeter is just over half an hour away with a fantastic selection of restaurants, bars and a rich history to discover, dating back to Roman times.
