The details
Walking boots off, kettle on, countryside stretching out in front of you. Herdwick Hut makes Somerset life feel like a dream.
Tucked into Tilbury Farm’s hillside meadow, this boutique hut looks out across Taunton Vale towards Exmoor. Come for a few days just the two of you, bring the family, or gather a couple of friends for walks, good food and fireside catch-ups.
Herwick is a double hut, offering living and kitchen area, separate bedroom and ensuite bathroom, all giving a feeling of space and luxury.
Inside, earthy Farrow & Ball colours and local sheepskins give the hut a warm country feel. An L-shaped sofa invites lazy afternoons, while Devon wool bedding adds comfort at bedtime. The main bedroom has a king-size cabin bed, while a cosy fold-down double offers space for two more in the living area.
The kitchen includes a Smeg electric oven and fridge-freezer; the bathroom has a waterfall shower and Bramley toiletries. Outside, the deck brings everyone together, with dining and lounging space for four and a hammock in summer.
There’s plenty to tempt you beyond your little patch of hillside. Head into the Quantocks for woodland trails and wide-open views, or make a day of exploring Exmoor’s moorland and valleys. For a change of scene, try rock-pooling at Kilve Beach, a wander around Dunster Castle or a steam-train journey on the West Somerset Railway.
Good food is easy to weave into the day, too. Pick up picnic supplies and something delicious for supper at Rumwell Farm Shop, or leave the cooking to the Rising Sun. The walk there takes you through fields and quiet country lanes – just the thing to work up an appetite. Book a table ahead, then take your time over dinner before wandering back to your hillside retreat.
