Sitting in the peaceful West Sussex countryside, this charming shepherd’s hut for two offers a restful rural escape just an hour south of London. Perfect for a couple’s retreat, a mother-and-daughter getaway or a catch-up with a close friend, it’s a place to unwind and reconnect in comfort. With both an outdoor bath and a private hot tub, your stay is made all the more indulgent, giving you two ways to relax beneath the stars.
When you arrive, you’ll love the tranquil setting and the delightful views of the surrounding countryside. Out the front of the hut, a pair of comfy armchairs sit opposite a fire bowl, inviting you to put your feet up with a drink, gaze out at your surroundings and toast marshmallows over the flames. There’s also a fantastic alfresco dining table here, ideal for peaceful summer meals outdoors.
Inside, Hawthorn Hideaway features a log-burner in one corner, keeping you warm and cosy whatever the weather outside. A quaint kitchenette comes equipped with an oven, microwave, electric hob, kettle, toaster and a large electric fridge — and on sunny days, the firepit doubles as a BBQ for grilling up delicious local produce.
The double bed offers a restful night’s sleep and has a large picture window at its foot, ensuring you can wake up to fantastic countryside views as you enjoy your first coffee of the day in bed. During the day, the bed folds away to reveal a comfy corner sofa, perfect for reading, chatting or enjoying a leisurely meal on the fold-out dining table.
As evening falls, pop open a bottle of bubbles and unwind in your private hot tub, or fill up the outdoor bathtub for a peaceful soak under the open sky.
Guests can add a touch of luxury to their stay with options such as a traditional afternoon tea, a ready-to-enjoy picnic hamper, or even a fully set-up countryside picnic experience with transport included. For something more invigorating, there’s also an outdoor ice bath session. Essentials are close by too, with local shops and farm stores within easy reach.
The surrounding area blends countryside charm with unique experiences. A ha-ha wall — a steep, deep ditch designed to keep livestock out without interrupting the view — is all that separates you from a wide field where sheep and cows graze peacefully, watched over now and then by Basil, the friendly spaniel.
For those wishing to explore further, a short 10-minute drive brings you to the renowned Knepp Rewilding Project, home to beavers, pigs and longhorn cattle, along with a superb farm shop and the acclaimed Rewilding Kitchen for a memorable meal. Prefer to go on foot? A scenic 20-minute walk across the farm leads to The George and Dragon, a welcoming pub serving delicious food in a relaxed setting.
