The Details

Sitting in the peaceful West Sussex countryside, this charming shepherd’s hut for two offers a restful rural escape just an hour south of London. Perfect for a couple’s retreat, a mother-and-daughter getaway or a catch-up with a close friend, it’s a place to unwind and reconnect in comfort. With both an outdoor bath and a private hot tub, your stay is made all the more indulgent, giving you two ways to relax beneath the stars.

When you arrive, you’ll love the tranquil setting and the delightful views of the surrounding countryside. Out the front of the hut, a pair of comfy armchairs sit opposite a fire bowl, inviting you to put your feet up with a drink, gaze out at your surroundings and toast marshmallows over the flames. There’s also a fantastic alfresco dining table here, ideal for peaceful summer meals outdoors.

Inside, Hawthorn Hideaway features a log-burner in one corner, keeping you warm and cosy whatever the weather outside. A quaint kitchenette comes equipped with an oven, microwave, electric hob, kettle, toaster and a large electric fridge — and on sunny days, the firepit doubles as a BBQ for grilling up delicious local produce.

The double bed offers a restful night’s sleep and has a large picture window at its foot, ensuring you can wake up to fantastic countryside views as you enjoy your first coffee of the day in bed. During the day, the bed folds away to reveal a comfy corner sofa, perfect for reading, chatting or enjoying a leisurely meal on the fold-out dining table.

As evening falls, pop open a bottle of bubbles and unwind in your private hot tub, or fill up the outdoor bathtub for a peaceful soak under the open sky.

Guests can add a touch of luxury to their stay with options such as a traditional afternoon tea, a ready-to-enjoy picnic hamper, or even a fully set-up countryside picnic experience with transport included. For something more invigorating, there’s also an outdoor ice bath session. Essentials are close by too, with local shops and farm stores within easy reach.

The surrounding area blends countryside charm with unique experiences. A ha-ha wall — a steep, deep ditch designed to keep livestock out without interrupting the view — is all that separates you from a wide field where sheep and cows graze peacefully, watched over now and then by Basil, the friendly spaniel.

For those wishing to explore further, a short 10-minute drive brings you to the renowned Knepp Rewilding Project, home to beavers, pigs and longhorn cattle, along with a superb farm shop and the acclaimed Rewilding Kitchen for a memorable meal. Prefer to go on foot? A scenic 20-minute walk across the farm leads to The George and Dragon, a welcoming pub serving delicious food in a relaxed setting.

FAQs about Hawthorn Hideaway

  • How do I get to Hawthorn Hideaway

The nearest train station is Horsham. From there, guests can book a taxi to the site (approximately 15 minutes) by contacting Station Taxis on 01403 754754. The owners are also happy to collect guests from the nearest stations with prior arrangement. If driving, please use the What3Words location: resort.resources.magically. Look out for the white swinging sign marked “Goffsland Farm” on the roadside, along with signage for Hawthorn Hideaway, and follow these through the farmyard.

  • Is there parking available?

There is car park located on a gravel surface behind a farm gate. Please note that the parking area does not provide sufficient space around vehicles to allow for wheelchair manoeuvring. The hut is situated approximately 40 metres from the car park and is accessed via a wooden boardwalk, around 80cm wide and unlit.

  • Is there electric vehicle charging at Hawthorn Hideaway

A Project EV 7kW Type 2 charging point is available on-site. Please contact the owners for pricing and further details.

  • Is Hawthorn Hideaway suitable for children or infants?

Children are not allowed at Hawthorn Hideaway but babes-in-arms are welcome. There is space for one babe in arms only at no extra cost and a travel cot is provided on request.

  • What cooking / kitchen facilities are provided?

The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, microwave, electric hob, kettle and toaster, along with a large electric fridge. Guests will find all essential cooking utensils, crockery, glassware, and plastic cups for use with the hot tub. A firepit BBQ and utensils are also provided for outdoor cooking.

  • Are there any accessibility considerations (e.g. steps, width of paths, mobility aid)?

The Hideaway is reached by a short walk along a farm path and has steps up to the entrance. The accommodation and decking are on one level once inside, but due to the rural setting and uneven ground, it is not fully accessible for wheelchair users or those with significant mobility issues.

  • What’s included in the welcome hamper / food & drink options?

Guests are greeted with a thoughtful welcome hamper featuring locally sourced essentials – often including fresh bread, butter, eggs, milk, and a few seasonal treats. Tea and coffee are provided so you can settle in straight away. Additional local produce, farm eggs, and barbecue packs may be available to order in advance.

  • What are the cancellation / booking amendment policies?

Bookings are handled via Canopy & Stars. The standard policy allows for free cancellation within 48 hours of booking (if more than 30 days before check-in). After that, cancellation terms depend on how close to your arrival date you cancel. Guests can usually amend bookings where possible, subject to availability. We recommend checking the specific policy on your confirmation or contacting Canopy & Stars directly for clarity.

  • What local attractions, walks, and dining options are nearby?

The property is set in the rolling Sussex countryside, perfect for long walks and wildlife spotting straight from the door. You’re within easy reach of the South Downs National Park, historic towns like Lewes and Arundel, and the Sussex coastline. Pubs and farm shops serving local produce are nearby, and there are several excellent restaurants within a short drive. Your hosts are happy to recommend their favourites.

  • Is there mobile phone signal / internet connectivity on-site?

Mobile phone signal can be patchy due to the rural location, making it a perfect place to switch off. There is no standard WiFi provided at the Hideaway, so guests should expect a more “off-grid” digital detox experience.
