Enter Gogwell through the wood panelled boot room, which is lined with OS maps showing just what a special location this house has. There are walks in all directions and the house sits perfectly right in the middle of a family farm, with rolling farmland around you, no neighbours and a lovely location up a very long drive.
Just off the boot room is the TV room, great for children who want to escape the rest of the group, for movie nights and the big game. There is also a second more formal sitting room, which is lined with books, and has cupboards full of games and puzzles - both are really cosy rooms with large squishy sofas and open fires.
The fabulous kitchen opens off the boot room and has lovely oak-floors and a warming Aga. There are two additional electric ovens, extra hobs, two dishwashers, two kitchen sinks and every pot and pan you need to cater for large groups. The kitchen has a church pew style seating area but it also opens into the large, bright and spacious dining area - the scene of many a happy dinner party! There is also a fun mirrored cocktail cupboard with a drinks fridge, and a wood-burning stove to cosy things up when the weather turns.
The dining room spills onto the verandah which is the ‘room’ that is hardest to leave. It runs the whole length of the south side of the house, is a sun trap and is a place to while away the hours. There is a long trestle table, cosy outdoor sofas and a BBQ and firepit, but the best bit is the breathtaking view which stretches out for miles across beautiful Devon countryside. Enjoy hearty breakfasts and summer lunches BBQs and sundowners - all shaded by grape vines and overlooking one of the finest views in Devon.
Much of your stay is spent upstairs so the owners have made the rooms worthy of that. They are calm, light and comfortable with lovely beds and high quality linen. They are configured as four super-king bedrooms and two twins, and there are three bathrooms, one family bathroom, one ‘Jack and Jill’ and one ensuite - off the master which also has a dressing room suitable as an additional bedroom for children. There are also two downstairs loos.
The barn is a lovely space, it has an oak floored yoga studio and a bedroom with a super-king bedroom and ensuite - this has no stairs and is suitable for those with mobility issues. This also works well for anyone who wants a bit of peace away from the main group.
The enclosed garden is a total joy and it is enormous, with huge lawns and orchards. There is a fabulous 15m swimming pool, great for lengths, for children and - as it has two shallow ends - it is also great for home-rules water polo. For the less energetic there are floating bean bags - perfect for a good book and a G&T. The pool is heated from May to September. For extra fun, there’s a games room with table tennis, table football and darts, and also badminton, croquet, hammocks and a swing on the old oak tree with views looking out to Bickleigh. There are even two resident peacocks milling about.
Gogwell is a peaceful, private retreat ideal for recharging, yet it is also perfectly located for exploring the best of Devon. Nearby, enjoy Knightshayes and its gardens, dine at the Lost Kitchen, or stroll along the Grand Western Canal. Within easy reach are the Wellington Monument (25 mins), Exeter (35 mins) and the beautiful gardens of Cothay Manor, Killerton and RHS Rosemoor. Lovely beaches like Saunton and Exmouth, as well as the wild beauty of Dartmoor and Exmoor - with their scenic trails and cosy pubs - make great day trips. From Gogwell, several public footpaths lead to the River Exe and the Exe Valley Trail, including a route to Bickleigh and the Fisherman's Cott, said to have inspired ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ Guests also have access to three miles of fishing on the River Exe.
