Head straight to the indoor heated pool for a leisurely swim or admire the views from the terrace. This might not be a soulful home, but it offers a refreshing space to relax and unwind during your coastal adventure.

You could fire up the barbecue or cook up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen, although, with world-renowned restaurants just a five-minute drive away, it might be more tempting to leave it in the hands of the professionals.

From here, stroll the cobblestone streets of the old town, embrace the waves on the beach or take a hike through the surrounding mountains.

Up where the Spanish border meets the French, the autonomous region of the Basque Country has a unique beat of its own. Towering peaks tumble down to the sea where former fishing villages are now foodie hotspots.

San Sebastian famously has more Michelin stars per square kilometre than anywhere else in Europe, packed into the belle epoque buildings at the city’s core. The region has its own take on tapas – pintxos (toasted bread piled high with fresh, local produce) are a bar snack staple, and you’ll find them on offer in the late-night bars and restaurants of all the major cities and towns.

This region isn’t short of culture either, with science museums and art galleries that look like the future came early in Bilbao, and the historic centre of Vitoria whispering of Roman conquests and medieval monasteries. Fringed by the Bay of Biscay, the Basque Country has plenty of beaches, too, from the golden horseshoe of La Concha beach in San Sebastian to the surfer’s paradise at secluded Laga.
