The details
Hidden away in an ancient Highland glen, Ghillie’s Rest is the sort of place that makes the modern world feel very far away. Once a traditional bothy, this beautifully restored cottage now provides a wonderfully comfortable base for four guests on the private Alladale Wilderness Reserve. There are no neighbours to disturb the peace, just vast landscapes, abundant wildlife and the freedom to settle into a slower rhythm for a few memorable days.
Inside, the cottage has retained plenty of its original Highland character while adding all the comforts you’ll appreciate after a day outside. Underfloor heating keeps things toasty, while the log burner is ready for evenings spent warming your feet by the fire. There’s a scenic dining room for long lunches and relaxed dinners, plus a large TV and media facilities should you fancy settling in with a film later on.
Two bedrooms can each be configured with either a double or twin beds, making the cottage equally well suited to a couple, small family or friends. There’s also a generous wet room with a bath, while the compact galley kitchen and small larder have everything you need during your stay. Bed linen, towels and firewood are all provided, and you’ll have WiFi and private parking too.
You won’t need to spend much time cooking. Breakfast provisions are supplied each day alongside freshly prepared two-course lunches and dinners, created by Alladale’s private chefs using local and seasonal produce, including ingredients grown in the reserve’s kitchen and aquaponic gardens. Everything is delivered to the cottage with simple heating and serving instructions, leaving you free to eat whenever you please. Take dinner at your own pace, then carry a drink onto the terrace and enjoy the stillness of the glen.
Days here can be as peaceful or adventurous as you like. Pull on your boots and explore on foot, head out on a mountain bike or take the plunge with a wild swim. Wildlife lovers can spend time in the nature hide spotting the reserve’s inhabitants, while organised Highland tours and outdoor activities offer another way to experience the landscape. Wild dining can also be arranged, as can wilderness sauna hire – a suitably memorable way to round off a day in this remarkable corner of Scotland.
