Enjoy a peaceful stay by the water’s edge in this quirky hideaway on the banks of the Boondreigh River. This delightful holiday dwelling is half vintage caravan and half wilderness cabin, giving it a unique look and feel.
The Fishing Hut was built by an artist 20 years ago and offers couples a romantic rural retreat, allowing you to embrace off-grid living and campfire cooking. The hut is locate on the grounds of Dod Mill, an old Scottish mill that is no longer in operation, and it shares the grounds with a smattering of other holiday homes. However, the Fishing Hut is situated across a bridge from the other properties and is tucked away in its own slice of countryside.
The hut has two outdoor decks, which offer ideal spots to lounge with your morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening whilst soaking in your surroundings. Inside, you have a sofa that sits in front of a log burner, which can keep you warm all year round. There’s also a quaint dining table for two, and a mini kitchenette that has a cold water tap, cast iron pans, cooking implements, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You’ll have a cool box, but no fridge. When it comes to cooking you can make use of the log burner, which has a hot plate on top and an oven below. However, come summer you may wish to cook over the fire pit outside.
Guests can wake up to marvellous views from the cosy double bed that has windows on three sides. The comfortable bed sits in the caravan-end of the property and has gorgeous aubergine bed linen and plenty of extra blankets for cool nights. This bed is a small double and is 4ft wide and 6ft long. There’s space for one additional guest if required on the extra single bed that’s located in the living area - be sure to ask for extra bedding. When not a bed, this doubles up as a sofa offering extra seating space.
The Fishing Hut has a modern eco toilet that is accessed from just outside the main entrance to the hut. The property does not have its own shower, however, guests can use the shower at the ‘Wash House, that is just a few minutes’ walk from the hut and is shared by a handful of other guests at Dod Mill. The Wash House also has a flushing toilet, a washing machine and a tumble dryer that you’re more than welcome to use.
Bird lovers will find sitting by the edge of the river a real joy. Relax on your private deck with a nice cup of tea and watch as wild dicks swim by. Other wildlife is also on display from herons to otters, so keep your eyes peeled! From the deck on the other side of the hut you can watch the mill’s rare sheep breed grazing in the field nearby.
Located, as you are, in the Scottish Borders, you have plenty of breathtaking scenery to explore. Hiking and biking routes are all around, so make sure to venture out. Those of you who wish to enjoy a day of culture, as well as some great pubs, and fine food will be pleased to know that the wonderful city of Edinburgh is also nearby. The Lothians, the English border and the county of Northumberland are also within easy reach.
Off-grid cabin with heating and cooking by woodburning stove, lights and USB charge points by solar power, composting toilet and cold water tap. Separate hot shower & WC which are on-grid. Unlimited logs. Dogs are welcome on request, but that dogs must be kept on leads at all times outside Fishing Hut, including by fire pit, as its located in a sheep field.
