The detail

Tucked away down the winding streets of the Italian medieval fortress town of Ficulle, this historic townhouse is packed with charm and character. Inside you’ll find grand chandeliers, exposed beams and brick walls and elegant carved headboards alongside a contemporary kitchen and bathrooms. Spend your days exploring Umbria’s stunning hilltop towns and cities or head out into the countryside to learn how to forage for truffles and taste the local wine. In the evening, enjoy a cocktail on the terrace at the top of the house before dinner, soaking up the spectacular views over Umbria and out towards Tuscany.

Step inside and you'll find the living area is divided into two sections. A cosy space with armchairs gathered around a fireplace is the perfect spot to snuggle up on chilly evenings. Move through to the larger area where you’ll find more comfy seating, a bar and glass double doors with stunning views. This space can also be used as a dining area with a dining table that comfortably accommodates eight guests, with the additional possibility to host a dinner for 14 if booking a special event. There’s also a dedicated work space just in case you need a quiet space to focus or just somewhere to get stuck into a good book. Head downstairs and you’ll find the underground cantinas which were once used as stores for wine and olive oil. These now make a lovely venue for a wine tasting or a cocktail or dinner party.

The kitchen is a lovely mix of the old and the new with contemporary appliances below beautiful wooden beams and with traditional terracotta tiles and an arched window. You’ll find an electric oven, a gas wooden range and a fireplace where you can grill food indoors as the Italians traditionally do in the winter. There’s also a glass dining table below elegant pendant lights set next to illuminated niches which offer plenty of atmosphere.

There are three bedrooms which are again furnished with a charming mix of antique pieces and modern comforts. Elaborate carved headboards sit behind sumptuous beds with Egyptian cotton bedding and designer bedspreads. Two of the bedrooms have a king size bed and two singles while a third bedroom has a double bed and a small balcony with beautiful views. The bedrooms all have their own ensuites with underfloor heating and rain showers.

There’s plenty to do in the area, from exploring Ficulle and the nearby city of Orvieto, both with origins that pre-date the Romans, to exploring the beautiful countryside of Umbria, famous for its wine and truffles. The owners of the townhouse offer guests the opportunity to join a hunter and his dogs as they hunt for truffles in their private forest reserve. You’ll also be able to enjoy wine tastings in their vineyards or even help with the harvest if you visit at the right time of year. Hire electric bikes and head out into the countryside and through the winding streets of the hilltop towns and villages or learn the art of making pasta from scratch.
