Eco Camp Patagonia is the trailblazing product of the exploration into creating unique and sustainable hotels. Located in the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, the accommodation was founded in 2001 by engineers Yerko Ivelic and Javier Lopez who took inspiration from the indigenous Kaweskar tribe of the area. This lead to the eco-friendly geodesic domes that are seen today, which run on solar and hydraulic energy and immerse into their surroundings.
There are 4 different types of dome to choose from, but each is comprised of the same basic sustainable principles. They are made from renewable materials such as pinewood and wicker, with thick insulated walls to retain heat and a wood stove and propane heater to add that extra bit of warmth. There are skylight windows and 40 percent of the energy is obtained through solar panels. The bathroom comprises of a shower and toilet which uses a compost chamber.
The standard and superior domes come complete with a double bed and stunning views across Chilean Patagonia. The suite dome offers more space and a king size bed, while the suite loft dome also has a mezzanine with an additional single bed. All of them also have outside space with raised walkways and seating areas.
The community dome is the social hub and is where guests can meet and bond with their fellow travellers and enjoy the delicious meals on offer. Then why not relax with a drink in the bar dome while sitting on comfy sofas, or unwind in the yoga dome while taking in the breathtaking views beyond.
There is so much to do in the surrounding area and getting out and about is a must. That could be going on one of the many hikes that takes in South America's wondrous mountains, valleys and lakes, with the chance to see wild horses, different plants and flowers and maybe even a puma. Thrillseekers can get sweaty with bike rides through the Atacama desert, or take on the white water with rafting in the lakes district. For food and drink lovers there are many wine and culinary tours which show off the best of Chilean gastronomy.
