The details
Croft Lodge Studio is a truly extraordinary retreat — an award-winning architect-designed home that received both an RIBA Award and the Architects’ Journal Small Projects Prize. Featured internationally and exhibited at London’s Design Museum as one of the most outstanding designs of the year, this remarkable property offers a blend of history, architecture, and nature.
Originally an 18th-century ruined cottage, the building has been carefully preserved within a new corrugated iron shell. Rather than restoring the ruin, the architects chose to protect it exactly as it was found — retaining the original oak structure, weathered stonework, ivy, birds’ nests, cobwebs, and the dust — all enclosed within a warm, highly insulated living space. The result is both atmospheric and unique.
Set within 1,450 acres of National Trust land with public access, the studio offers tranquillity and immersion in the landscape. Surrounded by ancient woodland, open grassland, and far-reaching views towards the Malvern Hills and the Bannau Brycheiniog, it is an exceptional escape for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, and lovers of the outdoors.
Inside, the house combines modern comfort with architectural character. The ground floor features two inviting living areas with wood-burning stoves, a dining space, and a well equipped kitchen with an electric oven, hob, microwave, air fryer, dishwasher, and fridges. A Smart TV, sound systems, underfloor heating, fibre WiFi, bed linen, towels, and electricity are all included.
Upstairs are two double bedrooms, including a beautiful galleried bedroom overlooking the living space, along with a contemporary wet room with shower and WC.
The studio comfortably accommodates up to four guests and is best suited to adults and older children aged 10 and above.
Guests can enjoy a private garden as well as access to the wider grounds of Croft Lodge, including a bluebell woodland featuring artworks by German artist Ottmar Hörl with KHBT, alongside a wildflower meadow. Parking for two cars and an electric vehicle charging point are also available by arrangement.
The surrounding area is rich in history and natural beauty. Nearby attractions include the National Trust’s Croft Castle, the medieval towns of Ludlow and Hereford with its Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi, and the famous book town of Hay-on-Wye. The Mortimer Trail passes nearby, making the studio an ideal base for exploring the countryside. Peaceful, thoughtful, and unlike anywhere else, Croft Lodge Studio is more than a place to stay — it is an architectural experience.
