The Details

This grand, spacious home oozes modern style and has large open-plan spaces and an abundance of natural light. Sitting against the dramatic backdrop of South Lakeland’s wooded fells, Charcoal House is a sleek, design-led retreat that blends Scandi minimalism with the rustic charm of its industrial heritage. Once a 19th-century charcoal store, this striking three-storey home has been transformed into a spa-style sanctuary with a private hot tub – and it's seriously special.

Wrapped in cedar cladding and framed by vast panels of glass, this architectural gem is all about light, space and serenity. Step inside with your loved ones and discover calming interiors layered with natural textures. Think soft sheepskin throws, bespoke oak furnishings and forest-inspired wallpapers that echo the surrounding landscape.

The top floor is the heart of the home – gather in the light-filled social space with all of your loved ones and enjoy long, lazy brunches and slow evenings. The chef’s kitchen is kitted out with top-spec appliances (including a wine fridge and boiling water tap!), while the dining table, lit by sculptural pendant lights, sets the scene for grand social meals that stretch into the night. Then, after dinner, head to the cosy lounge area with a wood-burner and plush Loaf sofas for a fireside chat with your nearest and dearest whilst taking in the panoramic views of the fells.

You can also spend hours outside in the peaceful landscaped garden where you can challenge your loved ones to a game of boules. Dine alfresco beneath the gazebo whilst taking in your surroundings then light the firepit and enjoy an evening drink as the stars come out above. For the ultimate dose of relaxation, slip into the bespoke Mor + Broze Wild Sauna – a one-of-a-kind wellness experience that fuses the raw elements of heat and nature. Then, to top it off, hop into your own private hot tub and relax in true style.

Back inside, the middle floor is where you’ll find the principal bedroom. This is a true haven where you can sink into the super-king bed, soak in the deep bathtub and wake to leafy views. A snug provides the perfect retreat for rainy-day movies or quiet reading away from the rest of the group. Head downstairs and you’ll find two further bedrooms – one ideal for grown-ups, the other a dream for kids, complete with twin beds, toys and quirky décor.

While Charcoal House is a haven of luxury, the Lake District’s wonders lie just beyond your doorstep. Wander into the woodland behind the house to spot roaming deer, or hop aboard the nearby Haverthwaite Steam Railway for a scenic ride to Windermere. Foodies can indulge at Michelin-starred L’Enclume or enjoy refined fare at Heft. For a sweet stop, The Bakehouse serves artisanal treats. History buffs will love the 18th-century Ironworks, while Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top offers a literary escape. Round off your day with a pampering session at The Swan’s spa, just a short stroll away.
