Castello di Postignano is a restored medieval village hidden in the hills of Umbria. More than a dozen suites, in reality more like apartments, are to be found on its peaceful cobbled streets which enjoy views across the Valnerina Valley.
Thought to date from the ninth century, Castello di Postignano is all you would wish an Italian hamlet to be. Winding lanes, terracotta roofs and rugged stone exteriors set the scene, with the apartments set around a central tower and frescoed church – a real focal point.
The spacious suites of this impressively large-scale restoration have either one or two bedrooms dressed with beautiful, high-quality fabrics, sumptuous sitting areas and luxury bathrooms. In some, the second bedroom is a twin; others have two doubles. Many of the suites have an open fireplace, and the inclusion of a kitchenette allows you to cook a little if you wish.
This village is so much more than a place to sleep… Castello di Postignano incorporates a trattoria and wine bar, La Casa Rosa, showcasing the best food from the region in simple, traditional dishes. Chef Maria’s cakes and desserts are not to be missed, while breakfast on the terrace during the summer is surely a must.
You could easily spend all day beside the outdoor pool, lined with sun loungers, or perhaps you would be more at home in the library or billiards room? Take a sauna, relax with a massage or explore the surrounding verdant countryside on foot or by bike. It’s all possible here.
Castello di Postignano lies just two miles from the small commune of Sellano, itself surrounded by wooded hills and home to a smattering of bars and a pizzeria or two. It’s around 40 miles to the Umbrian capital of Perugia, but well worth the trip to see this lively university city’s historic centre.
Equally impressive, Terni lies a similar distance south, while the ancient town of Foligno, another architectural gem, situated on the Topino river, is even closer.
Of course, you may not feel the need to leave Castello di Postignano at all. They call this place ‘magical’, and it won’t take long for you to see why.
