The detail

Head out into rural Scotland but with views across the hills towards Glasgow at Burnhead Bothy. This sustainable holiday home is located on the 1600-acre Burnhead Farm that is the home to Highland cattle and Swiss Valais sheep.

The off grid bothy sleeps up to 4 people and is the perfect option for a quiet and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 3 large solar panels provide all the electricity required for the timber frame building and while there are no power sockets, there are USB points for charging a phone or laptop. This eco-mindset is present throughout Burnhead Bothy, with sheep’s wool providing the insulation, while water comes from a private spring.

The open plan kitchen, dining, and living room is the focal point of the house. The kitchen is well equipped with a gas hob, oven, and a fridge. Meanwhile, there is a dining table and chairs for 4 people and a comfortable sofa bed sitting in front of the wood burning stove. All of this is framed by a huge glass wall that opens out onto the large outdoor decked area that looks out over the countryside beyond. Elsewhere on the 1 level of the bothy is a double bedroom with sheep’s wool duvets and a bathroom with an electric shower and a flushing toilet.

If you want to know about the concept of the bothy and eco credentials, Burnhead Bothy is a sustainably designed timber frame building in the Kilsyth hills. The bothy has been designed to complement its location making the most of the views across the hills towards Glasgow. The bothy is situated in field grazed by our livestock which is accessed through a farm track (not tarmac). Amenities The bothy is an open plan kitchen, dining and living area with a wood burning stove and sofa bed. The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob and oven, and small fridge. The bathroom has a shower and toilet. There is a separate double bedroom. There is a large deck around the Bothy with seating to enjoy the countryside views. Wood for the stove is provided along with towels, and bedding. Eco Credentials Sustainable Timber Sheep Wool Insulation Environmentally Friendly Paint Water from private spring Wood Burning Stove Large Solar Panels (providing enough electricity to provide lighting and charge a mobile phone or laptop)

Situated in the Kilsyth Hills the farm is easily accessible from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Falkirk, and Stirling. There is also plenty to explore nearby, including Auchinstarry Marina, where people can take a stroll along the Forth and Clyde Canal, or get a little bit more adventurous by hiring a bike, canoe or kayak. The nearby quarry is also great for rock climbing. A little further down the canal is the Falkirk Wheel - a rotating boat lift that connects it with Union Canal.

For history lovers the Colzium House Museum is worth a visit, while those who like a bit of culture could head to Cumbernauld Theatre, or visit the impressive 30-metre high horse head sculptures known as The Kelpies. Finally the Kilsyth swimming pool is open 7 days a week and also has a sauna and steam room to keep those of all ages entertained.
