The details
This beautiful building was once used by local craftsman William Braund and his team to repair sails. The workshop fell into disrepair before the current owners transformed the space with the help of award-winning architects. The sympathetic restoration highlights the original features of the building, such as the stonework and the wooden beams, while adding in some contemporary elements that create a real sense of luxury.
Inside, you’ll find the building has been furnished in a contemporary, minimalist style which shows off the original building. The living spaces are open-plan, creating a laid-back feel and are fronted by big sliding glass doors which open out onto the courtyard. There’s a big kitchen next to the living area with deep, comfy sofas and a wood-burning stove. Perfect for relaxing evenings in front of a film or some downtime with a good book. The dining table is positioned in a light-filled spot right in front of the big windows, a great place to start the day with a delicious breakfast.
There are five bedrooms in total, sleeping up to 10 guests. The master bedroom features a super king bed and the other four are just as luxurious with the choice of super-kings or twins. All are equipped with extra deep mattresses and crisp, white bedding and smart TVs. The bedrooms share three bathrooms which have large walk-in showers and you’ll also find a beautiful cast iron bathtub where you can relax after a long walk along the coast or an activity-filled day at the beach.
Step outside into the pretty courtyard and you’ll find more dining space for barbecues on sunny days. There’s also a handy wetsuit drying area for those who’ve braved a dip in the sea and a garage for boards and bikes. In the evenings, gather around the fire pit, toast some marshmallows and enjoy a hot chocolate or an after-dinner drink as the sun sets.

There are shipwrecks to discover and coastal paths to explore, before heading back to Braunds Sail Loft for a relaxed dinner and a glass of something by the fire pit.

We had such an incredible stay — the house is stunning, spacious and the perfect layout for a large group (we had 10 people stay including a bunch of kids). The outside area was heavily used for BBQs, fire pits and outside games — I think we spent as much time in the garden as we did in the lounge! Private and safe for little ones too. Great location, short drive to beaches and walking distance to a little creek that leads to the town centre — the kids loved the walks from the house. I also appreciated the car charger — one of many little details that made the place feel like home! Emma and the team were great too, responsive and incredibly helpful with changeovers and answering all my silly questions!! Highly highly recommend Braunds to anyone visiting Devon!

We had the absolute pleasure of staying at Braunds Sail Loft for Christmas this year, and it exceeded all of our expectations! This was our first time spending Christmas away from home, and we were a little apprehensive—but from the moment we stepped through the door, it truly felt like a home away from home. The design of the house is simply stunning—every detail has been thoughtfully considered, blending modern elegance with a warm, welcoming charm. The layout is perfect, with spacious rooms that allowed everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. Whether we were gathered in the cozy living area or preparing meals in the beautifully equipped kitchen, the space accommodated us perfectly. The kitchen was incredibly well-equipped! From the cookware to the little touches that made meal prep a breeze, it felt like nothing was missing. We loved how everything was designed to make guests feel comfortable and cared for. The house itself is so spacious; even with our group, we never felt cramped. It was the perfect setting for creating wonderful christmas memories together. A special mention must go to Emma, who was so helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. From the initial booking to any little questions we had along the way, she was always quick to respond and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect.
