The details

Wake up beside a private lake with the Lake District fells rising beyond at The Basecamp Lakeside Cabins, a collection of seven eco-led retreats on a working farm and wetland reserve. With freestanding outdoor baths overlooking the water, alpacas and llamas wandering the surrounding fields and wonderfully dark skies overhead, this is a memorable spot for switching off between adventures in the Northern Lakes.

Each cabin has been carefully positioned to sit quietly within the landscape and offers a cosy, thoughtfully designed retreat for two people or a small family. Step inside and you’ll find a welcoming living space where a wood burning stove provides plenty of warmth after a day on the fells. There’s also a double sofa bed for additional guests and unlimited WiFi when you want to stay connected.

The compact kitchen is fully equipped with a hob, oven and sink, making self-catering nice and easy. There’s a comfortable double bedroom for a peaceful night’s sleep and a private ensuite with a walk in shower. Eco-friendly soaps and toiletries from local makers add another thoughtful touch. However, one of the real highlights awaits outside. Fill the freestanding bath, sink beneath the bubbles and gaze straight across the lake towards Mell Fell and Blencathra.

Life here revolves around the farm and the landscape. Alpacas and llamas belonging to Alpacaly Ever After’s Woolly Army live in the surrounding fields and you can book experiences ranging from meeting and feeding the animals to guided alpaca walks and hands-on husbandry days. This is a genuine working farm, so you’ll also see the team caring for animals and managing the land throughout your stay.

You won’t have to travel far for supplies either. The award-winning farm shop and cafe is open daily, offering locally sourced produce from the butchery, bakery and kitchen as well as breakfast supplies and packed lunches for days out. Come evening, head to the communal woodland shelter and fire pit or simply step outside your cabin and admire the stars in this fabulous dark sky setting.

Basecamp sits alongside the A66 between Penrith and Keswick, putting the Northern Lakes within easy reach. Head out walking amongst the surrounding fells, spend a day exploring Keswick or get out on the water before returning to your lakeside retreat. Back on the farm, keep an eye out for otters, badgers, foxes, hares and an array of birdlife around the carefully restored wetlands.
