Perched high on vast moorland above the dramatic slate landscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the shepherd’s huts at Plas Weunydd are made for switching off and immersing yourself in the wild beauty of Eryri (Snowdonia). With rugged mountain peaks, quarry-scattered hillsides and ever-changing skies stretching out in every direction, these five beautifully crafted hideaways invite you to embrace a slower, more elemental way of staying, without giving up life’s simple comforts.
Designed as cosy outposts for modern nomads, each hut is wonderfully intimate and thoughtfully laid out. Inside, you will find a welcoming open-plan space with a snug sleeping area dressed in soft linens and a king size bed that encourages long lie-ins after days spent outdoors. A wood burner sits at the heart of the hut, perfect for warming cold hands, drying hiking socks or simply setting the mood as dusk rolls across the mountains.
Despite their off-grid setting, the huts are impressively well equipped. There is a compact kitchenette for preparing relaxed meals, plus an ensuite shower room offering hot water after bracing swims or muddy adventures. Step outside and fire up the gas barbecue, dining alfresco with nothing but fresh mountain air and far-reaching views for company.
Days here are shaped by the landscape. Pull on your boots and head straight out from your doorstep to explore the surrounding peaks, moorland paths and historic quarry trails. Eryri (Snowdonia) is ripe for adventure, from wild swimming in glassy mountain lakes to paddleboarding calm waters or kayaking rushing rivers. There are fifteen peaks and nine mountain ranges to discover, alongside ancient castles, wholesome villages and cosy pubs pouring local tipples. When you return, tired and content, guests can book a session in the nearby wilderness sauna, soaking in the heat as the mountains glow in the evening light.
Although the huts feel wonderfully remote, the comforts of Plas Weunydd are close at hand. The hotel restaurant serves hearty, traditional dishes made with local ingredients, from generous breakfasts to comforting dinners, alongside Welsh beers, ciders and whiskies. It is the perfect place to refuel before another day of adventure or to linger long into the evening, sharing stories from the trail.
