The details

Aquila is a spectacular lakeside hideaway sitting right on the shores of Haweswater, surrounded by 100 square miles of protected nature reserve in the magnificent Mardale Valley. Arrive via a sweeping mountain road and the setting feels wonderfully cinematic, with this striking house tucked between water and fells in one of the Lake District’s most dramatic corners. Wake to birdsong and ever-changing views across the reservoir, spend your days roaming the surrounding wilderness then return for drinks and dinner overlooking the water.

Inside, Aquila is every bit as impressive as its setting. The building’s industrial past has been celebrated rather than hidden, with concrete ceilings, exposed steel beams and smoked oak floors creating a bold backdrop for vintage furniture and contemporary comforts. Huge expanses of glass draw the landscape into the spacious living areas, so whether you’re lingering over coffee, settling in for an afternoon with a book or sharing a bottle of wine as evening rolls in, the mountains and water are always part of the experience.

Step outside and you’ll find a large deck overlooking the lake, offering a fabulous spot to make the most of Aquila’s remarkable setting. Fire up the BBQ and gather around the outdoor dining table for long alfresco lunches, evening drinks and dinner accompanied by the sounds of nature. Back inside, the well-equipped kitchen has everything you need for relaxed self-catering stays, including an electric oven, dishwasher, fridge-freezer and Tassimo coffee machine. Underfloor heating keeps things wonderfully cosy, while a 50-inch Freesat TV, DVD player and WiFi are on hand for laid-back evenings.

Up to six guests can spread out across three peaceful bedrooms. The generous master suite has a king size bed and an industrial-inspired ensuite shower room finished with Italian ceramics. The second double bedroom looks towards the eastern fells, while the flexible twin room enjoys its own gorgeous reservoir views. There’s also a family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower, plus a separate WC.

The real joy of Aquila is having the wild landscapes of the Lake District quite literally outside your door. Head off on foot around Haweswater or tackle the dramatic eastern fells, keeping an eye out for the reserve’s abundant birdlife as you go. Ullswater is less than 10 miles away for canoeing and motorboat adventures, while Aira Force makes a fabulous day out. Penrith is around 30 minutes away when you fancy venturing back towards civilisation for shops, pubs and restaurants.
