The detail

Ana Ana is the impressive creation of artist Eric de Bruijn and with its huge open spaces it is ideal for an artist's residency or a large group of friends and family wanting an extraordinary holiday escape.

Upon entering from the city centre street, close to the river, you'll find yourself in a vast, light space with high ceilings and a gorgeous open living area. Despite its size the space feels homely with lots of comfortable seating, long sofas, a fire place, many overlapping rugs and a giant, fully equipped kitchen where the entire party could gather to cook and drink together surrounded by beautiful examples of the artist's work.

The downstairs area is as much a living space as it is a gallery and has frequently been used for photo shoots. There is an additional studio space which has a TV with cable, Netflix and Chromecast meaning you have lots of options for your next movie night. Doors from this room lead to the first outdoor space where you'll be delighted to find a long pool where you can swim or lounge and enjoy a cold drink in the Portugal sun. There's an outside shower here as well and a dining table if you fancy a light lunch pool side.

There is also a large, elegant roof terrace reminiscent of a riad in Marrakech with long rows of low soft seating surrounding a large fire pit at the centre. There's also a partially covered dining area to protect you from the midday sun if you fancy taking advantage of the American gas BBQ in this lovely open setting.

Back inside, there's a mezzanine room on offer with two double beds and an ensuite shower room. This space is elegant and cool in crisp white with dark blinds for a peaceful nights sleep.

When you head up the stairs you'll be welcomed by another enormous space that boasts a second kitchen and living area, five bedrooms and two additional bathrooms with showers. All of the bedrooms are decorated in a similar fashion with low comfortable beds, white walls and dark blinds creating an ideal place for a really good night's sleep. Four of the rooms have double beds and air conditioning and the fifth room has twin beds and a fan, making it ideal for children.

Portimão is a port city best known for its old quarter, busy marina and close proximity to many beaches. The area is rife with local restaurants and cafes with plenty of seafood deli's which come highly recommended. The local speciality is grilled sardines and the place really is a foodie's heaven. Some of the finest local food can be found under the old bridge! And the owners favourite place for comfort food is Dona Ana, just a few metres from the house.

Boat trips to visit the coast line and caves can be booked at the water front area and there's plenty of public transport in the form of buses and trains if you want to explore further afield and check out some of the amazing beaches. If not, there is a lovely beach just a 10-minute walk from Ana Ana.
