The pretty village of Sivas in southern Crete is the charming setting for the Agapi Holiday House. With room for 4 adults and 2 children, this sympathetically renovated home has cute outside spaces perfect for enjoying great weather and great company – and it’s all just over 1 hour’s drive from Heraklion International Airport and 4km from the beach at Komos.

Family-run Agapi keeps the décor traditional but has many of the amenities you would find in a modern property. As well as a well-equipped kitchen, there’s free Wi-Fi, TV and use of a laptop. You’ll enjoy your time dining at Agapi – not only is there a beautiful dining area with a fireplace inside, there’s space out on the inner yard and the terrace too, with breathtaking views of the Messara Plain and surrounding Asterousia mountains which are bound to captivate you.

When it’s time to get some sleep, there’s a bedroom with double bed and a sofa-bed in the living room, all stylishly dressed with hypo-allergenic linens. Living room features like the vintage furnishings, attic space and stove really give this place charm – as do the owners who take great care to make your stay perfect. The house was built in 1906, and you’ll find it’s lost none of its original character.

The location of Agapi is yet another plus-point: protected by the Ministry of Culture as a traditional village, Sivas is close to fascinating archaeological sites such as Gortys and Phaistos, and acts as a great gateway to the beautiful southern coast – beach lovers should head for Kalamaki, Matala and Komos. Agapi even offer free bike hire if you would like to explore the island on two wheels.

The village itself has several tavernas serving delightful Cretan dishes, as well as a coffee shop and church on the central square. During the summer, you may come across cultural events and activities too – dance, art, local folk music.... Chances are, you’ll be falling in love with the place and resolve to return.

Agapi is run to high ecological standards, and the abundance of colours and scents in its garden really make you feel you’re at one with nature. With so much around the island to enchant you – from bird-watching and botanic walks to the agricultural landscapes and traditional food production – it offers an introduction to the great outdoors you are sure to appreciate.
