The details

For a romantic escape with a remarkable story behind it, 42 Church Street offers something truly special. Part of Pegge’s Almshouses, a collection of beautifully restored 17th-century homes dating back to 1669, this boutique hideaway for two pairs centuries of heritage with contemporary design, thoughtful touches and warm hospitality. Set on one of Ashbourne’s most historic streets, it’s a chance to stay somewhere genuinely unique on the doorstep of the Peak District.

Behind the handsome local sandstone exterior, original oak beams and historic details provide a beautiful reminder of the building’s past. These characterful features sit effortlessly alongside carefully chosen contemporary furnishings and modern comforts, creating a welcoming home that retains all the charm and individuality that make it so memorable.

Even arriving comes with a touch of theatre, thanks to the novelty of two front doors. One opens into the stylish kitchen and dining area, complete with contemporary fittings, Sophie Conran tableware and an Illy espresso machine for leisurely morning coffees. The other leads into the generous lounge, where leather Chesterfield sofas, soft lighting and a small electric stove create an inviting space to settle in for the evening. A SkyGlass 4K TV with Netflix and Dolby Atmos brings a modern touch, while fibre WiFi runs throughout the cottage and garden.

The boutique feel continues upstairs. After freshening up in the beautifully appointed ground-floor bathroom with its walk-in rain shower, climb the stairs to a bright study before passing through a wonderfully quirky triangular wooden door into the bedroom. A supremely comfortable king size bed dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets awaits, with plush towels and robes providing those thoughtful touches that make a stay feel extra special.

We stayed here for 3 nights, and everything was completely perfect, and we will be staying again. The cottage itself was just incredible, was so comfortable and had everything we needed. It really did feel like a home away from home. The courtyard area was beautiful and offered plenty of shade for when we wanted to sit outside. It is also perfectly positioned next to any shop or cafe you would want while also feeling quiet and away from all the noise. There is also a really nice walk nearby which we will check out next time. Clive and Mari were the perfect hosts. My partner and I are always a bit anxious about meeting hosts, but it very quickly felt like we'd known them for years, really feeling like they took an interest in us as people and helped us come up with ideas for our trip that we maybe hadn't thought of. We really did have 0 issues, complaints or worries; it was completely perfect, and I really hope we can stay again soon.

This was a perfect break away for us. Clive and Mari are impeccable hosts and are so kind and considerate. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They have created a wonderful homely and peaceful place to stay. Amazing attention to detail throughout. I just wanted to lift it up and bring it all back with me as it is an amazing space to live. Home from home. We love what you have created. Thank you.
