The detail

It won’t escape your notice when you arrive at New York Public Library that it is not a public library, and neither is it in New York. In fact, the story behind the name of this rurally located holiday retreat – actually on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales - owes more to the city of York to the south than it does to the Big Apple. Designed and built by the owner, this four bedroom property has views across 15 acres of woods and parkland - and offers peace and inspiration just like its namesake.

Chalet-like in style, enter New York Public Library via the large sliding doors and you’ll arrive in its spacious living and dining area which makes the most of the countryside views with huge floor-to-ceiling windows lining one side of the room. This open-plan space features thoughtfully chosen furnishings with sleek sofas, a modern central dining area and table football to enjoy. You’ll also spot the odd thought-provoking artwork from Damien Hirst lining the walls.

A generously sized kitchen is packed with gleaming stainless steel appliances including an American-style fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave – and look out too for the stone work surfaces, 6-person breakfast bar and the granite-lined walk-in larder. Preparing those meals will be an experience in itself.

Two of the bedrooms have direct access to the house’s 1st-floor sun terrace, and the master has use of its own en suite and an eye-catching in-room bath and basin. The third bedroom has two single beds, ideal for children, plus there’s a house bathroom with a walk-in shower and impressively cool styling. The fourth bedroom is in a separate annex and has a super king size bed that can be slit into twins.

Just as noteworthy is the property’s outdoor space. In addition to the terrace on the 1st floor - which has its own dining table and chairs for breakfasts with a stunning natural backdrop – you’ll find a log-burning hot tub at ground level. There’s a fire pit, and a lookout tower for the kids, and it gets better: there’s even a pizza oven mounted on a massive tree trunk. No doubt, this house has had a lot of creativity and love poured into it.

The wonderfully tranquil New York Public Library lies around 5 miles from the market town of Richmond. You’ll find a Norman castle, Georgian theatre and a cinema there, along with many pubs and restaurants. The town acts as a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales which officially begin just to the west, and its enviable location means the Pennines and the North York Moors are little more than 20 miles away. You can even drive to Durham, Ripon, Harrogate or the Howardian Hills in less than an hour.

A beautiful house and an incredible location - New York Public Library is one place you won’t be able to stay silent about.
