Team CoolStays enjoys a few nights at Heartwood Treehouse

Published: 7th August 2019

We paid a visit to the sublime Heartwood Treehouse in the depths of mid-Wales. Here's what we thought and why Heartwood really isn't your average treehouse...
The safari tent

Owned and managed by Abigail & Shaphan Davies, Heartwood Treehouse sits on the Oaklands Glamping site, which it shares with two luxury safari tents - more about those in a minute. The site itself is located in Mid-Wales, meaning its surrounded by incredible countryside, and is just a stones throw from the pretty market town of Welshpool.

We were greeted by Abigail and Shaphan on arrival, and before we made or way to the treehouse we were given a tour of the two safari tents on-site. However, upon inspection its fair to say that these two offer far more luxury and comfort than your average tent. The canvas structure allows you to feel as if youre up close with nature, yet the hard wooden walls that separate the living area from the bathroom and bedroom, offer up plenty of privacy - something that youre not often provided with when sleeping in a tent!

The private terraces also offer sublime views of the surrounding countryside, meaning guests can enjoy evenings sitting and sharing a drink whilst gazing out at the scenery. And, for that added slice of luxury, one of the tents even comes with its own wood-fired hot tub! Lovely.

After looking around the two tents, we were taken up the impressive staircase to Heartwood Treehouse, which is, its safe to say, not your average treehouse. Perched high up on stilts, among the branches of an old oak tree, youre offered plenty of privacy. And as the two safari tents were empty for the duration of our stay, we had no-one but the sheep and cows for company.

Outside, the treehouse has a large wooden terrace, where you can sit with a book, or dine in the evening. Also, tucked around the corner is the luxurious, deep, wood-fired hot tub. The hot tub was ready to use right away, but even the next day, getting it nice and warm wasnt a problem. We just lit a few logs, and within the hour it was ready to use once again.

We were blown away by the view from the terrace, and despite the photos looking great, they just dont quite do it justice. Youre presented with a quintessentially British countryside scene of fields, trees, and sprawling farmland. And the old, rural, British charm was accentuated even more by the sound of the steam train trundling by every now and then, as the sheep and cows conversed in the
field behind.

Stepping inside the treehouse we were presented with luxury at every turn from the rainfall shower and underfloor heating, to the wine cooler and slick modern design. The open plan living room is shared with the modern, fully equipped kitchen, complete with a coffee machine (a real life saver in the mornings!). And whilst we dined outside on the terrace throughout our stay, if you did want to eat indoors, theres a glorious, giant wooden dining table thats been cut from one of the large trees on-site. We were also delighted to discover that the entire glass front of the treehouse can be slid open, allowing you to let the outside in, meaning we could really enjoy the gentle summer breeze and fresh country air.

The super-comfy bedroom has a large, soft bed, as well as a giant, double-ended bath tub sitting beneath a carefully placed window that perfectly frames the countryside. And its through that window that youre able to enjoy the amazing view as you lie in bed with your morning cuppa - a really lovely way to begin the day.

We stocked up with food in Welshpool (which is around a 10 minute drive) before our arrival, however, theres also an on-site honesty shop where you can purchase some essentials such as drinks, chocolate, and burgers for the BBQ. We were also provided with a cracking Welcome Pack on arrival complete with chocolates, some bubbly, and a few other treats to enjoy during our stay. Preparing dinner was a joy thanks to the super-modern Siemens cooker, and we also fired up the gas BBQ on our second night to grill up a summer feast which we enjoyed outdoors as the sun began to set behind us.

For two days we whiled away the hours reading and relaxing in the hot tub away from the rest of the world. Perched up high we soaked in the view, watched the cows and sheep, and breathed in the wonderful country air. Come night time we switched off all the lights, and looked up at the stars which were out in full. If you want to get away from the trappings of day-to-day life, and enjoy some time with a loved one to recharge your batteries, then this is the place for you. If youre a lover of the British countryside, and enjoy treating yourself to luxury and comfort, while being close to nature, then there are few places Id recommend as highly as Heartwood Treehouse.
