Q&A with Askham Hall

Published: 10th December 2014

Askham Hall is a stunning boutique hotel in the Lakes District. It has it all, history, granduer and comfort. We spoke to it's owner Marie-Louisa Raeburn about its transfromation from magnificent 13th Century family home to luxury hotel.

From family seat to luxury hotel! How did this transformation come about?

Charles Lowther

It is our former family home, owned by the Lowther family for 200 years. My grandfather moved in there after our ancestors moved out of Lowther Castle next door. Askham Hall is originally a defensive Pele Tower dating back to the late 1300s. It was also a rectory before being converted into a grand Elizabethan mansion in the 16th Century by the Sandford family, who owned it for 400 years before we did.

After our father the 7th Earl of Lonsdale died in 2006 we decided to turn it into a hotel in order to preserve it for future generations, as it's too large for any of us to live in and expensive to run! My brother Charles Lowther and I, we both grew up in Askham Hall, are now all involved in the running of the business.

What inspires you to run this family business?

It's simple really, the positive feedback from guests, it makes all the hard work worthwhile! We know what a special place this is. So whether celebrating your wedding here or coming away for romantic weekend away you are going to have an amazing time.

What is the best dish on the breakfast menu?

It has to be Eggs Royale, or pancakes. Believe me it is very difficult to choose!

What are your design inspirations?

We love the design at The Pig, Limewood, & Babington House.

What would your treatment of choice be in the Garden Spa?

Our signature treatment - Total Indulgence - a blissful 90 minute full body holistic massage. You walk out feeling completely relaxed and refreshed.

What has been the best theme for a wedding at Askham Hall?

With our glorious gardens the theme is usually English country garden. this goes perfectly with the style of the venue, however we have also had some more unusual ones, such as a bike theme as the couple met through cycling.

Askham Hall is a magnificent 13th Century hall in the Lake District. Rooms are priced from 150 / night.
