My grandfather moved in there after our ancestors moved out of Lowther Castle next door. Askham Hall is originally a defensive Pele Tower dating back to the late 1300s. It was also a rectory before being converted into a grand Elizabethan mansion in the 16th Century by the Sandford family, who owned it for 400 years before we did. \n\nAfter our father the 7th Earl of Lonsdale died in 2006 we decided to turn it into a hotel in order to preserve it for future generations, as it's too large for any of us to live in and expensive to run!
