An incredible home in an incredible setting, Rock Reach House has generated more than a little press coverage and built quite a fan base. In the Southern California desert, a short drive from Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree National Park, this two-bed steel house sits amidst imposing boulders in a private community, offering modern luxury and breathtaking natural surroundings.
Rock Reach House makes the most of its location – the house was constructed using plenty of glass so you have great views throughout, and the outdoor space is very much part of the home. Each bedroom has direct access to a private patio, and a large front deck off the living area makes for a fine spot to watch the sunset. There’s even a yoga platform.
Not only that, you will have the use of an outdoor shower, ‘cowboy’ hot tub and a genuine Jacuzzi, occupying its own special position among a cove of rocks with open views across the desert – it’s big enough for four as well. Another special spot is beside the outdoor fireplace, where a deck with seating awaits – just made for drinks beneath the stars and deep discussion long into the night.
Slide open the doors and inside you will find a sleek living space which blends seamlessly with the kitchen and dining area. You have Apple TV, Wi-Fi and top-end stainless steel kitchen appliances, plus all the books, games and cooking paraphernalia you may need.
Two identically sized bedrooms with California king beds and blackout curtains sit either side of the bathroom with bath, shower, towels and toiletries… they think of everything here. The whole place looks so good, you will be constantly photographing it – so bring your very best camera.
When the time comes to venture out, there’s plenty to see within a short drive. Originally established as a film set slash mini-town by a group of Hollywood actors, nearby Pioneertown was seen in dozens of TV and film productions in the 40s and 50s and, unsurprisingly, boasts straight-out-of-a-Western landscapes in all directions. These days, its biggest draw is famed local eatery and live music venue, Pappy and Harriet’s, with burgers, steaks, Tex-Mex and, from time to time, some big-name artists. It’s worth booking ahead if you want to experience it.
Much larger and more developed, Yucca Valley has all you would expect in terms of amenities, but it’s what lies to the south that’s the real treat. The vast, Bono-inspiring Joshua Tree National Park is the place you should be exploring. Full of hiking and rock-climbing opportunities, you may want to make some plans before you visit, which these days is easier than ever. Since gaining its National Park status, the rugged Joshua Tree now has a number of visitor information centres. Just as well, as it is – justifiably – more popular than ever.
With natural wonders like this all around, Rock Reach House genuinely lives up to its five-star ratings. Much more than a place to stay, this one is a life-affirming experience.
