This newly renovated holiday home on the Cornish coast offers families or groups of friends a secluded seaside getaway with spectacular views. ‘Penolva’ means ‘lookout to the headland’, which is certainly an apt name for this house. Gaze out over St Mawes Bay, the Carrick headlands and St Anthony’s lighthouse from the beautiful terraced gardens or stroll down the private slipway to the sea to take it all in from the water.

This is accommodation fit for royalty and was built in the 1960s by a personal friend of the Queen Mother. Since then, members of the royal family have often stayed at Penolva, enjoying the privacy of the large grounds and the beautiful scenery.

The house sleeps up to eight guests in four luxurious bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms. The large living spaces, such as the magnificent dining room and the open drawing room, are ideal for spending some quality time with friends and family. All are furnished in a contemporary style, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The impressive kitchen is equipped with an Aga and a modern pantry which makes dinner time a breeze.

Head outside and explore the beautiful terraced Cornish garden which has direct waterfront access from the lower terrace. The outdoor dining area overlooking the sea and the barbeque allow guests to really make the most of this space.

St Mawes is a small Cornish fishing village surrounded by the sea and rolling hills. You’ll find many beautiful gardens and thriving flora and fauna here thanks to its location within the gulf stream. This means that the temperature remains mild throughout the year and can reach that of the Mediterranean in the summer. The proximity to the sea means that restaurants and pubs serve up the freshest of fish and shellfish. Visit The Victory Inn or The Rising Sun for a taste of the local cuisine, or venture to one of the neighbouring villages, such as Portscatho or Portloe, for a delicious dinner.

St Mawes is a popular spot for watersports and sailing and the local clubs schedule plenty of events and activities. If you prefer to take the pace down a notch, try your hand at some fishing or visit St Mawes Castle. There are also many walks accessible right from the front door, allowing you to really explore this picturesque corner of Cornwall.
