The beautiful 14th century Austin Friar’s Monastery is set in the heart of the medieval citadel of Rye. Step through one of its 700-year-old archways and you’ll find a Georgian cottage with plenty of original features, including fireplaces and exposed brickwork, creating lots of atmosphere. The interior has been expertly furnished by Alex MacArthur, choosing pieces in-keeping with the building’s character, such as the gorgeous freestanding bath and a collection of paintings that emphasise the link to the monastery. It’s a cosy hideaway for two and the perfect base for exploring the historic town and its stunning natural surroundings.
It’s a traditional two up, two down cottage with some lovely architectural features, such as a large through fireplace between the rooms downstairs and the pencil bead tongue and groove curving around the rounded corner of the snug. The kitchen is packed with character with the exposed brick of the chimney breast and the copper and brass details glinting off the pans and sink fittings. You’ll catch a glimpse of the snug next door through the fireplace which is a lovely room with a comfy sofa and armchairs, inviting you to sit back and relax after a long day at the beach or a walk in the countryside. On warmer evenings you can also relax in the cottage’s own outdoor space or head through the gate to the monastery garden.
Upstairs, the bedroom and bathroom extend into the apex of the roof, creating a lovely sense of space. The bedroom features the warm tones of the exposed chimney breast which is complemented by the colour of the walls, creating a relaxed, cosy room. There’s a beautiful metal-framed double bed setting you up for a great night’s sleep. Across the landing, you’ll find the bathroom with some lovely fixtures, including a traditional high cistern toilet, an antique sink with a triptych mirror and a freestanding bath with a shower overhead.
There’s plenty of exploring to be done in the area with the cobbled streets of medieval Rye on the doorstep and Camber Sands a stone’s throw away. Get your bearings with a stroll to the iconic Rye Castle which offers panoramic views of the town and out to the coast. Explore the higgledy-piggledy streets of Rye with its cosy cafes, art galleries and independent shops before heading off for a day by the sea. Camber Sands is famous for its miles of golden sandy beach, perfect for a long walk or trying out some watersports. The nearby Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a great place for birdwatching or there’s a lovely circular walk around Rye and Winchelsea taking you through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and providing some stunning views.
